The Falls Don't Wait
Lot 1 - Online auction bid now https://bid.maregold.com
White water exploding over dark rock. Deep burgundies and near-blacks in the stone, flashes of red, cool blue shadow in the crevices. A glimpse of teal sky and autumn colour at the top edge — just enough to place you firmly in the Canadian Shield.
Ross Robertshaw didn't take the conventional path. He spent nineteen years working at Eaton's before walking away in 1973, relocating to Buckhorn, Ontario, and converting an old church into his gallery. He called it Rockcroft. From there he painted Haliburton, Algonquin, Parry Sound — the wild interior of Ontario — with a palette knife and a fearlessness that self-taught painters sometimes have and trained ones sometimes lose.
His work showed at the Mackenzie Gallery at Trent University and Gallery Gabor in Toronto. His oils sell at auction from C$600 to C$2,000, with a 2026 Waddington's result of C$2,220 for a single canvas.
This waterfall is a strong example of what he did best. Physical, immediate, and completely alive.
Signed Robertshaw lower right. Oil on canvas. 21.25 × 27.75 in sight.

Lot 6 Bidding closes May 24, 2026

Tall Scots pines filling the foreground. A white thatched cottage sitting quietly in the valley below. Fields rolling green and easy toward distant blue hills. And on the far right horizon, almost like an afterthought — a church spire reaching up through the haze.
W.H. Wright didn't labour over this. You can feel it in the brushwork — confident, expressive impasto laid down by someone who understood exactly what they were doing. This is plein air painting the way it's supposed to be. Paint mixed with real light. A scene that existed, captured by someone standing in it.
Wright is a listed Canadian artist with a genuine auction record. A Gatineau Farmhouse by his hand sold through Waddington's Fine Art in Toronto — one of Canada's most respected auction houses. This isn't a decorative curiosity. It's a collected work by a documented painter with a paper trail.
Oil on board. Signed lower right. The kind of landscape that makes a room feel like it has a soul.
Britain seen through Canadian eyes. Quiet, confident, and completely alive.
W.H. Wright · Oil on board 15 x 19 inches · Signed lower right - Listed Canadian artist · Waddington's auction record

This one doesn't let you look away.
On-line art Auction Lot #4
Bid now: https://bid.maregold.com
A horse. A cloaked figure huddled beneath it, almost absorbed into the animal. And on the right — a monumental draped presence, massive and still.
Joan Simpson painted this in 1979 and she wasn't interested in comfort. She was interested in truth. The surface is thick and physical — blues, greys, deep blacks with ochre burning through underneath. You can feel the sculptor in her.
A recognized artist across Ontario and regional North American circuits, Simpson built her reputation through decades of uncompromising work rather than commercial gallery machinery. Her originals don't surface often. This is the real thing.
Signed in full on the reverse — Joan Simpson, 1979. Excellent condition. Original mixed media on canvas.

1906. Oil on canvas. Pure power.
When James Louis Weston painted this in 1906 he was at the height of his career — and it shows in every brushstroke.
A turquoise wave breaks violently against dark coastal rock. Two sea stacks rise from the churning surf like sentinels. A storm sky tears open above. And the impasto on those rocks? You can feel the weight of them.
Weston came from Canadian art royalty — his father James Weston Sr. was a founding member of the Society of Canadian Artists. This isn't just a beautiful painting. It's a piece of Canadian art history, signed, dated, and housed in its original period gilt frame.
119 years old. Still commanding the room.
Oil on canvas · Signed J. Weston, 1906 Period gilt gesso frame with ornate corner detail
