📣 BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: The 2026 Antigonish Chamber of Commerce President's Dinner is Coming — and This Year's Speaker Will Leave You Inspired.
What does it actually mean when someone says "Health IS our Wealth"?
For Dr. Nicholas Giacomantonio, it's not a catchphrase — it's a mission he's been living for nearly two decades.
Dr. Nick is a Cardiologist, Full Professor at Dalhousie University, and Director of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation at the QEII Health Sciences Centre. He's one of Atlantic Canada's most respected voices in heart health — but what makes him truly extraordinary isn't just what he does in the hospital.
It's what he does on a bike.
Since 2007, Dr. Nick has led the Heartland Tour Nova Scotia — an annual ~1,000-kilometre cycling journey across Nova Scotia, travelling from Yarmouth to Cape Breton, stopping in communities to talk about heart disease prevention. Not to raise money. Not to sell anything. But to ask people to do something harder: change.
"I don't ask people for money; I ask people to change," he's said. And that message has resonated — with thousands of Nova Scotians joining the tour province-wide over the years.
Heart and vascular disease is the leading cause of death and disability in Nova Scotia — but Dr. Nick believes it is largely preventable. His bottom-up approach puts power back into communities, increasing people's desire to help themselves.
He's not just a doctor. He's a Cape Breton kid who grew up in Whitney Pier, became a mechanic first, and then decided to dedicate his life to keeping hearts beating longer. His story is one of grit, purpose, and the belief that our greatest asset — as individuals and as a business community — is our health.
And he's coming to Antigonish.
