Local news used to have a predictable home and we all knew where to look for specific information. Now it's spread across a dozen social media feeds and websites. The Antigonish Reel (antigonishreel.ca) is a local attempt to gather it back in one place. Events, weather, public notices, a business directory, local sports and the practical local answers that are hard to find anywhere else. Free to read, no algorithm deciding who sees what, no ad networks. In under two months, more than 3,700 people around town have used it.
You probably saw what it can do during the Highland Games: full schedules, same-day results, one page that thousands of people kept checking back on all week. The Reel is keeping that energy going and is working on a similar project for the Eastern Nova Scotia Exhibition. There's also plans to launch the Reel Sport Hub over the next few weeks, carrying live scores and schedules for every StFX varsity sport and a growing number of other local teams from youth to the pros.
Coming down the road: the Antigonish Digital Paper of Record, a companion project meant to actually archive community life here rather than let it scroll away. A permanent record of our days here in Antigonish.
None of this happens on its own. Colin Duggan conceived of and built the Reel, and it's now open to local business sponsorship for the first time. As a Chamber member, you get 50% off Reel Contributor access, normally $50/month, down to $25/month (or $250 paid annually). That gets your business posting events and updates directly to the Reel's main page, plus a clearly labelled acknowledgement on the site. With this plan you can post to the Reel knowing your customers will actually see it instead of relying on the decisions of an algorithm.
