“Strait Area Safety Services (SASS) is an occupational health and safety consulting business based in Richmond County on Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island. Our focus is on helping our valued clients reach their health and safety goals through a variety of services that range from one-of training sessions to ongoing on-site health and safety program development, management, and auditing.
SASS specializes in providing occupational health and safety services for client-businesses of all industries and sizes, from one to two-person offices to worksites with hundreds of workers. We will also work with your in-house Safety team or committee to provide you with reliable third-party objectivity.

Don Martell (CRSP) is the owner and operator of Strait Area Safety Services Ltd, bringing with him a long career in the safety and compliance field. In addition to being a Canadian Registered Safety Professional, Don’s previous experience includes having been an Occupational Health and Safety Officer with the Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Advanced Education, Safety Lead with Flint Canada, and 25 years of regulatory enforcement and 8 years of working with clients in Eastern Nova Scotia assisting them in achieving regulatory compliance to Nova Scotia and Canadian OHS law and improve their due diligence as it applies to Nova Scotia and Canadian OHS law.

Strait Area Safety Services (SASS) offers a wide variety of services to its clients throughout the field of Occupational Health and Safety. Every business is unique, and the challenges they face are equally so. It is for this reason that each of our clients receives a personal and unique set of services based on their own needs and challenges.
Our list of available services includes, but is not limited to:
- Comprehensive Safety Audits.
- OH&S Program development, implementation, and management; or assisting in updating
current OHS Program.
- Job Site Analysis (JSA) and Safe Work Procedure Development and field Inspections.
- JOHS Committee Coordination; Group Presentations; and Employee Training.
In addition, our range of services are also available to be provided in a variety of approaches and strategies. Where some of our clients need only a few one-of training sessions or job-site inspections, others find great value in having an on-site safety consultant offering day-to-day safety supervision and oversight.”
