ā€œThis motto extends beyond our team though. By failing faster we end up learning more. We learn more from our mistakes than from our successes. To me, failing faster means taking manageable risks and developing our skills so we are able to be successful when it mattersā€ - Ian McTavish, Huntsville High School teacher, FIRST robotics coach, Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching 2024

The FIRST Robotics team from Huntsville High School competes all year long in challenges where they design, program, and build industrial-sized robots to play an action-packed game. I met Alison, one of the team mentors, at one of the FIRST competitions in Newmarket. My role was to support students in the Quiet Room, as the atmosphere in the Ray Twinney arena was loud and could be overwhelming at times.

In conversations with Alison and students from her team, I learned that the FIRST Robotics program in Canada teaches its members how to work together to solve problems related to their robot. It also encourages participation and interaction in their local community through fundraising initiatives, promoting the club to encourage younger members, and traveling to different cities both in Canada and the United States.

FIRST Robotics Canada is absolutely a great way to build character, service and leadership; failing faster so success comes sooner.

It's Going to be a Bumpy Ride

I have become a biker chick. It happened gradually, when my husband Gerd bought a motorcycle to ride with his 75 year old father. Then I started going on short rides with him to get ice cream, and now I own a distressed leather jacket, biker gloves and a helmet.

For our latest and likely last ride of the season, we went with friends up to Algonquin Park, stopping every hour or so to stretch or for a coffee. I’m not going to lie, after three hours on the back of the bike, I was sleepy, cold and not interested in completing the ride. But after four hours of riding, Algonquin completely amazed me with the beauty of the trees, the changing leaves and the clear blue lakes.

Adam Grant wrote ā€˜Get comfortable with being uncomfortable’, when describing how individuals can learn pretty much anything, from foreign languages to how to deliver a good joke. My leadership clients in Grades 9 to 11 are learning to stretch themselves to take on responsibilities that are new and require feeling awkward and uncertain for a while.

Being comfortable with being uncomfortable is how we all learn new skills, and experience great things.

Creating Networks at Band Camp Wahanowin

Our daughter went to band camp last weekend. She came home happy, tired and with three loads of laundry. She also came home with a desire to practice her trumpet more, great memories and new friends.

These are the connections and experiences that make school enjoyable, and create the bonds that last even as friends go to different high schools or move away. Our girl is beginning to naturally create the networks of people who will support her journey.

It’s a triple win, as band camp also looks good on scholarship and university applications. Just saying.

This past weekend was the 25 anniversary of my husband, Gerd, graduating from Brock University. While he was a student, Gerd was very involved in the Residence Life Staff, both as a Don and as a Head Resident. We got together for a reunion with many of the people who were on staff at Brock at the same time as Gerd, and with whom he has kept contact for over 25 years. In these photos are teachers, principals, vice-principals, national and global directors and associate vice-presidents to name a few.

Our networks support us in so many ways, and are built through common interests, shared experiences and maintained through connection. Scholarships are another way to create networks, and so are the enjoyable activities we can do to build strong profiles.

My point? Start and keep doing things that make you happy, help others and bring people together. These contacts may be your friends and supporters for life.

What are you reaching for?

Last March my rock-climbing son and daughter brought me to an indoor gym in the centre of London. We were enjoying March Break as a family, and we all got to pick a preferred activity. Mine was having high tea together, and Stephan and Anna chose an afternoon at The Castle Climbing Centre. They absolutely love bouldering, which is a type of climbing without ropes.

There is no kind way to say this - I am not good at rock climbing. It’s not intuitive for me where to place my hands and feet, and my butt seems to poke out way too far from the wall. It’s fun though, good exercise and a great way to spend time with my children.

This makes me think about my Grade 11 leadership clients, who are beginning their passion projects this year. They are reaching to complete each step of their goals, and sometimes they make mistakes. None of them actually fall off a wall, but when they encounter areas of challenge, we work together to figure out a new path. I had my teenage children encouraging me as I climbed my way up the wall at The Castle in London. It’s my privilege to be a support and cheerleader for my young leaders as they work through the process of creating and executing their visions.

How do I find scholarships? Here’s where to start:

These are three of the non-university websites which I have usually recommended to my clients. I reached out to my network of high-school and university students to see what they like to use for their own research. I have chosen the top three websites that my hive-mind uses to find scholarships.

1. 99scholarships automatically takes you to the application page when it profiles a scholarship. When I contacted them for information I got an email the next day from Hamza Khan, the Managing Director at Student Life Network. He recommended using the websites StudentAwards and yconic as resources to search for scholarship funds as they are connected to the same network.

2. Scholar tree - This is a fairly new website and was listed in 2019 on The Startup List on Toronto Starts, an organization that promotes new start-up companies in Toronto . According to their website, Scholar tree does not gather student market data. This company makes its money by charging scholarship providers a fee to use their platform and to manage their scholarships. It is easy to navigate and I like that it is actively promoting the creation of new scholarships.

3. Indspire is a registered national Indigenous charity which raises funds and financially supports programs to elevate and enrich the lives of Indigenous peoples and their communities. This includes scholarships, mentoring and educational programs. Their bursaries, scholarships and awards page has numerous links which take you directly to the information on how to apply.

In all, I like using these sites because they are providing a resource to help students pay for their education which reduces the stress of dealing with debt during and after their studies.

In March of 2021 I suffered a concussion after being hit in the back of the head by a volleyball at work. The effects of the blow started two days later, with an extreme sensitivity to light and sound, fogginess, inability to focus on complex tasks and confusing feelings of anxiety. The darkest times persisted for six months, and I had to reduce my workload to part-time hours to manage the headaches and fatigue. That summer, my mother and I had planned to hike in the Rocky Mountains, a trip she had done several times as the camp musician. My physiotherapist, who started working with me on an intensive concussion therapy program in June, strongly advised me against the trip. His advice was to focus on the three P’s of my therapy program: Patience, Pacing and Persistence.

It has been over three years since my injury, and I still have some lingering symptoms. This photo of my mom and me hiking in the Stubai region of Austria encourages me in my progress and recovery. About one year after my accident, we flew through Germany and Austria, took part in guided hikes through the region and ascended the Stubai glacier. We followed the beginner trail, took rest breaks and kept a moderate hiking pace. This was an incredible journey from the previous summer, when I had to wear sunglasses indoors and could only walk 5 minutes on the treadmill.

This makes me think of my ā€˜reluctant leaders’, who I am guiding to find the ways they can serve their community with their interests and abilities. Taking one small step in their leadership journey moves them forward in confidence and experience.

In September I am returning to full-time work for the first time in three years. I plan to take rest times throughout the day to give my brain a chance to adjust. Working full-time is my new mountain, and the view at the top will be worth the climb. That, along with a good coffee and nice pastry.
