Hiring a Trade contractor?
When hiring a trade contractor, we look for trade contractors where the owner is from the trade.
Why you might ask?
When the owner is from a trade background we have much more confidence and assurance that the technical information is correct and the job will be done right the first time..
When a non tradesperson or wannabe decides to open a trade business, I wonder, are they in it to help people? or to make as much money as possible?
Yes we all have to make money, but which one will be fairer with you and which one will have a true core understanding of the situation and what really needs to be done?
Kinda like going to a mechanics shop where the owner is an investment firm from the big city. Are they really looking to fix your vehicle or is their primary goal to make as much money from you as possible? Dont get me wrong, it always comes down to who owns the shop and how they treat their customers. Buyer beware!
Not to mention, with some owners, competant trades people will rotate like a turnstsll at a fair and will undoubtably impact continuity and quality of field operations.
And dont be fooled by; a pretty website, bright lights and fancy giveaway’s!! That’s marketing and business people can be good at that!! But when you read the ‘about us’ and its a bunch of fluff, and didn’t tell you a thing about the people behind the company, think twice!
Another big indicator for me is ‘are they incorporated?’ Look them up on the provincial registry, this is a great start to see if they are even a registered company. Are you going to trust your; Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC and other critical systems to just anybody?
In order to avoid nightmare companies, we suggest to always dig for the real background of the owner, hustler or helper?
At the end of the day when hiring new contractors it almost seems to be a crap shoot in most cases, but hopefully these tips can help when trying to choose the right contractor or avoid the wrong contractor!!
