With 35+ years of piping experience, Lochie is a seasoned professional bagpiper available for weddings, funerals, memorials, graduations, and special ceremonies across the Montreal area. Lochie began piping in 1976 at the age of 12, studying under Pipe Major Morag Jamieson of the Sons of Scotland Pipe Band in Ottawa. As a Major with
the 2870 Ottawa Service Battalion Cadet Corps, he was selected in 1982 to travel to Edinburgh, Scotland, to study at the Army School of Bagpipe Music under Captain John Allan. His early leadership roles led to service with the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa, where he was both a piper and band officer responsible for administration and logistics. In 1983, Lochie began his career as a police officer with the Nepean Police Force and served as its official piper until its amalgamation with the Ottawa Police Service, where he was transferred to criminal investigations. After a brief hiatus from band life, he returned to piping with renewed dedication. Since then, Lochie has:
- Played with the Ottawa Police Service Pipe Band
- Served as Pipe Major for the Sons of Scotland Pipe Band (Grade V)
- Led the band in competition at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow
- Personally performed for Queen Elizabeth II at Balmoral Castle on three occasions
- Competed at the Grade II level in solo piping and piobaireachd
- Served as Pipe Major of the RCMP Pipes and Drums (C-Division, Montreal) for 8 years
In 2014, he received the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers, and in 2025, the King Charles III Coronation Medal for Outstanding Volunteer Service, recognizing his commitment to youth mentorship and cultural preservation through piping. Lochie has also been a piping instructor at the Montreal Piping and Drumming School since 2016 and offers private lessons for students of all levels, from complete beginners to advanced.
