Most facilities need a professional cleaning at least once a year. Busy operations with heavy traffic or outdoor equipment often need it two to four times a year.

Eastern Ontario makes this a bit more demanding than other regions. Road salt and slush through the winter, mud and pollen in spring, and dust or product buildup through a busy season all add up fast.

You're probably due for more frequent cleaning if your site has:
Heavy vehicle or equipment traffic Outdoor storage or handling that leaves residue Proximity to gravel roads or unpaved surfaces.

An uncalibrated scale doesn't send you a warning. It just quietly costs you money, every single day it's off.

Underweighing outgoing product means you're giving away material you didn't get paid for. Overweighing incoming loads means you're paying for more than you actually received. Neither shows up as one big number. It shows up as margin that erodes a little at a time, until someone finally asks why.

There's also the compliance side. Running outside Measurement Canada standards can mean fines, failed inspections, and in repeated cases, real legal exposure. And if a customer catches a discrepancy before you do, that's a trust problem that's a lot harder to fix than a scale is.

Ever wonder what a scale technician is actually doing when they show up for a calibration?

For a platform or bench scale, we apply certified test weights at multiple points, empty, mid-range, and near capacity, and confirm the readout matches within the allowed margin at each stage.

For a truck scale, it's a bigger job. Test loads move across every section of the deck, because a scale can be dead accurate in the middle and off at the corners. We check linearity, repeatability, and shift, then correct anything that's drifted before sealing the unit.

Once everything checks out, you get documentation of the results and a certification seal, your proof of compliance if it's ever needed.

If your business buys or sells anything based on weight, this one's for you.

Under Canada's Weights and Measures Act, any scale used in a transaction where price or quantity depends on weight has to be a certified, legal-for-trade device kept within an approved margin of error.
Measurement Canada sets that standard and inspects on a schedule that varies by industry.

Here's the part that trips people up: calibration and certification aren't the same thing.

Calibration checks and adjusts accuracy. Certification is the official confirmation, from an accredited provider, that your scale meets the legal standard.

A scale can be freshly calibrated and still not carry a valid seal if the work wasn't done by someone accredited to issue one.

• The same object weighs slightly differently every time you check it

• Readings change depending on where the load sits on the platform

• The scale fails its own self-check or zero-return test

• There's visible corrosion, damage, or wear you haven't addressed yet

• It's been longer than you can actually remember since the last service

None of these mean panic. They mean it's time for a look before a small drift turns into a real accuracy problem, and a real cost.

Once a year is the bare minimum for scale calibration, not the finish line.
How often your scale actually needs to be checked depends on how hard you're running it, what kind of environment it's sitting in, and how much a small error could cost you if it went unnoticed.
A few things that mean you need a check outside your regular schedule, no matter how recently it was done:

• Your scale took a hard impact or was overloaded It got moved to a new location
• The temperature or humidity around it changed a lot
• Readings have started looking a little off

High-volume operations often need checks every 3 to 6 months. Lower-use equipment can sometimes stretch further.

Rose Scale is looking for someone to drive our test truck on an occasional, as-needed basis, mainly to cover vacation days for our regular driver. This is a great fit for someone semi-retired or looking for casual, part-time work to stay active, not a steady paycheck.

Drive the test truck as scheduled to cover fill-in days.
