Values Exercise
Our happiness is determined by how well our life is lived in relationship to our core values. Once we are clear on our top values which govern how we wish to live, we can look at all of our activities and ask if what we do each day in in alignment with those values. The more aligned we are the happier we tend to be.
The following are examples of some values. In Dare To Lead by Brene Brown on page 188 there is a comprehensive list.
1. Good Health
2. Money and financial security
3. Spirituality/Faith
4. Relationships - significant other, family, friends
5. Career
6. Peace of Mind
7. Equality and justice
8. Integrity
9. Respect
10. Education and knowledge
Now compare each value as follows to determine which values are at the top of your list:
Is good health more important to you than money and financial security?
If yes, then compare – is good health more important to you then your faith and spiritual life?
If yes, then compare – is good health more important than relationships?
If no – then your list starts to look as follows:
1. Relationships
2. Good health
Is good health more important than peace of mind?
If no, ask, is relationships more important than peace of mind?
If yes – then the list is as follows:
1. Relationships
2. Peace of mind
3. Good health
Once you figure out what you really value and live accordingly, life is so much happier.
Give it a shot. I would love to hear your feedback.
