As a person who has worked in Referee Development for many years we have people pass our paths that start out as students and soon become friends, Juan Marques you are one. We first met at UBC while I was assessing another game and said who is this person I don't know him. I talked to him about Refereeing better games and to come to the office during the week. He said he would love to but would need to after he returned from going the Mexico and watching the Gold Cup. I thought interesting, a few weeks later who is at the front desk???? Juan
Since that it has been a great ride to different matches, helping mentor, supporting in clinics, rehab training in the pool and many other things. Last night I was fortunate to assess you in your last game in the Semi Final of the Canadian Championship and you didn't disappoint. You and Rachel are driving across Canada to Nova Scotia to start a new page. I wish you both all the best and look forward to seeing you again soon.
From Student to Friend thanks for your commitment, hard work and being a great role model and an even greater person.
All the best

Congrats to both Carly Shaw-Maclaren and Stefan Tanaka-Freundt for joining Chris Wattam to the 2022 FIFA List. It is great to see these officials rewarded for all the hard work put in over the years. Just like Chris they all started like many young BC Officials with a dream and now that dream is a reality. I know they will continue to work and refine skills. We look forward to the future for these 3 and the 2022 season.

I want to thank all involved over the Thanksgiving Day weekend at the first ever Youth Nations Cup in Cloverdale Athletic Park in Surrey. The organizing committee lead by Ali Wilkinson & Jeff Clarke were amazing to work with and both were very supportive of the Referees and the work we are doing to develop them and improve the game.
There were 31 Referees involved and they all put in a great effort. The Referees did between 1 and for some a 2nd game but never back-to-back. All games were mentored with the mentors giving little tips at half-time to improve the Referees’ performances both in the middle and on the line. There were 10 Mentor/Coaches including myself for the 22 matches.
I need to thank these people for making the time to help this next crop of up-and-coming Referees improve their skills. The feedback from the Referees and all was great to hear.

Looking forward to the next opportunity to continue to develop and help Referees.

The tournament went great but was also a lot of fun. The referees did an outstanding job and we were so appreciative of their contributions. Also seeing the ref development in between games and how important the refs felt is so important and meant a lot to me.

Looking forward to working on more great projects with you in the future. Keep advocating for refereeing!

Regards,
Jeff Clarke

Hi Everyone,

So you may ask what have you been doing? Its been a busy few months, starting in late July with a National Assessor Session with the Canadian Soccer Association follow in August by helping run a FIFA Fitness test for some of the FIFA, National and Provincial Referees. We then did a few Assessments in the Canadian Premier League. September saw the begining of the outdoor season in BC and we started helping and working with the Grassroots Referees. I attended the SX Cup on all 3 days and we helped coach some Referee at the Youth and District level. I then joined the team at Ridge Meadows Soccer Club as one of two Mentors for the Club. It has been great to see the Referees in action that we were involved with from the Small-Sided clinic in June and helping them in their first matches.
Then we started working and preparing some of our higher level officials for matches. Voja, Joey, Rodrigo, Sydney and other.
Voja has now had his first Canadian Premier League match and it was great to go to Victoria and support him. Great performance and look forward to more to come.
Also a great set of officials were assigned to MLS Next matches U15 and U17. Rodrigo Zadunaisky, Laura Rincon, Timothy Ma in the U17 match and Theo Diederichsen, O-lin Metz and Garret Coombs. Both set of officials had great games.
I want to share some pics with all of you and we will be posting more educational material in the near future.

Refereeing has so many health benefits but also provides a way to give back to your community.

“You don’t officiate to get in shape. You get in shape to officiate.” From the start, officials need to be able to keep up with the action in order to make the right rulings. But there are more health benefits than one may realize from spending time on the field or court.
