The previous record was set in 2021 when the country welcomed more than 405,000 newcomers.

EXCITING NEWS FOR SPOUSES OF FOREIGN WORKERS IN AGRICULTURE AND LOW-SKILL POSITIONS(NOC C AND D)!
The Minister of IRCC, and the Minister of Tourism and Associate Minister of Finance, announced that Canada is extending work permits to family members of temporary foreign workers in all skill types.
Expanding the eligibility for work permits to family members accompanying the principal applicant to Canada will help address labour shortages by assisting employers in finding the workers they need. It will also rejoin families who have been disconnected by COVID and by other immigration restrictions.

Starting in January 2023, through a temporary 2-year measure, Canada will expand eligibility to work in Canada to spouses and working-age children through a phased approach for workers at all skill levels.
The temporary measure will be implemented in 3 phases to ensure its successful implementation:

Phase 1 will enable family members of workers coming to Canada through the high-wage stream of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program or the International Mobility Program to apply for an open work permit .
Phase 2 aims to expand the measure to the family members of workers from the low-wage stream of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, following consultations.
Phase 3 will include consultation with agricultural partners and stakeholders to assess operational feasibility for expanding the measure to family members of agricultural workers.

Positive updates to Temporary Foreign Worker Program (Work Permit):

Big win for both employers and foreign candidates !! 🎉

1. LMIAs will be valid for 18 months!!
What this means to foreign candidates - if first work permit application gets refused, they will still have a chance to reapply on the basis of the same LMIA due to increased validity!

2. Global Talent Stream applicants will get 3 years (rather than 2 year) work permits - Intracompany transfer work permit holders will have more chance to convert into a permanent residency, while their WP is still valid!!!

3. No limit on seasonal workers in a work place, increased the period to 270 days duration

As of April 30th:
1. Companies can hire up to 30% of their workforce in the 7 eligible sectors, all other employers 20% (up from 10)

2. Canada will end the current policy that automatically refuses LMIA applications for low-wage occupations in the accommodation and food services and retail trade sectors in regions with an unemployment rate of 6% or higher.
