Forgiveness is not the same as excusing harm, forgetting what happened, or forcing peace.
In trauma therapy, conscious forgiveness is a voluntary, sequenced clinical movement: not a demand placed on the client.
The clinical task is not to persuade someone to “let go.” It is to support truthful, embodied, culturally responsive discernment, with attention to safety, context, power, and lived experience.
A client may choose forgiveness and maintain distance from someone unsafe.
A client may choose not to forgive and still build a meaningful, connected life.
Both can be clinically coherent.
Practitioners must also distinguish conscious forgiveness from spiritual bypassing and premature reconciliation.
In BEC111, reconciliation is understood as “a return to friendship with self”: not the restoration of access to a person, relationship, or system that remains unsafe.
This work is taught within the Becoming Method® and its sequenced nine-step clinical process, including:
• Safety and partnership
• Structured truth-telling
• Tracking the body and the parts
• Accountability
• Cultural humility and attention to family, community, and systemic context
