Sleep
Have you considered how important sleep is in maintaining optimal health?
Monitor your sleep behavior for 1week and let's chat about your results. Track your routines,
What time do you start your bedtime routine each day?
What time do you shut down all activities and settle into your pillow?
What is your mood like before you settle in?
Do you count the minutes, watch the clock?
At what time do you start feeling tired/sleepy?
Do you wake up during the night? Why?
Do you have difficulty going back to sleep?
What time do you wake up and what time do you get out of bed?

Food for thought
Today as I sit back and reflect on the effect this Coved 19 epidemic has had on our lives over the past
months, I am thinking of thousands of individuals whose ability to fight this virus is impacted by a
chronic health condition. Being admitted to hospital because you were experiencing confusion, sweating
and have been hiding a cut on your right foot which would not heal? You have not been yourself lately.
The Dr looks at your medical history and knows without asking that you are exhibiting signs of
uncontrolled Diabetes. What the Dr doesn’t know because he does not ask is that you have not checked
your blood sugar levels in months and your Metformin prescription ran out 2 weeks ago. Your last dose
of your long acting insulin which you should take at night was 2 days ago. The intake nurse tries to dig
deeper but you resist. You are admitted, blood sugar levels stabilize but you had an amputation of your
left leg. During rehab and discharge planning, you disclose to the social worker that you live in a high rise
apartment building where elevators some times malfunction and you cannot afford to move as your
wife lost her job due to COVID 19 and your work hours have been reduced. Individuals living with a
chronic health condition need to ask for support from whatever resources there are in your area. Speak
with a Diabetes educator in your area they can connect you with services that can assist with
medications. Shame and pride often makes situations worse. If you are struggling seek help. In this
scenario, if Covid 19 came knocking would this family be able to cope? Would this man be able to
recover after contracting this virus? If he died what would be the cause?

Extra safety precautions being encouraged for seniors also apply for individuals living with chronic health conditions. If you have Diabetes it is harder for your body to fight viruses and Covid¬19 is no joke. Asthmatics need to be extra vigilant, you can experience inflammation of your airway in an Asthma attack, this virus attacks your respiratory system so your puffers may become ineffective, be observant of your symptoms. If you have any other respiratory condition be vigilant in your precautions if you step out of your home. Smokers, you are already compromising your respiratory and circulatory system with the unhealthy ci******es. Quit for Life.

Risk Taking
sounds scary, doesn't it?
When faced with life’s uncertainties
What do you do?
Do you curl into a ball and hide from them hoping life will change?
I hope not!
I hope you grab that sucker by it’s head and say, “no not today”
Not as long as I am breathing “no not today”.
With a diagnosis of a chronic condition, what do you do?
Do not give up and wait for the long-term complications to set in.
You consult with your health care team, listen to their recommendations, ask questions.
You adjust your life style to ensure you can say “no not today”

To be successful or consistent at any form of exercise or strenuous physical activity don't think about it just get up and move.

Nothing tests your resolve to change than having temptation staring you in the face each time you open the pantry door or search the fridge for an item. The best solutions- avoid walking down the aisle of the grocery store to "see what's on sale" or telling yourself "I am gonna get this for when friends pop in or just a small treat now and then". If it is your weakness avoid it, fill those cravings with healthier choices. What's your weakness and what would be a healthier alternative? Food for thought.

With a new year comes many resolutions. Now that our minds have adjusted to thinking in 2017 terms many people are taking charge of their healthy lifestyle goals. I have heard talk about going alcohol free/sugar free/ carb free for the first month of the year to reset their metabolism. I wonder how that is going. My goal for this month is to increase my sleep each night by 1 hr and to walk 2000 more steps than I usually do. That means sleeping 6.5 hrs and walking 14000 steps per day. What are your first month goals? make a comment and share will you?

This time of year can be very difficult for those managing Diabetes and Hypertension. Portion control can be difficult when you attend family and work related gatherings. You want to join in and have fun with everyone but having fun means partaking of all the delicious food including treats and the alcoholic drinks are a must. The key is tasting everything and not filling your plate to the max. If you have a heavier than usual lunch , have a lighter dinner, and be mindful of your intake especially for those on insulin. A small taste of wine is ok just be mindful of interaction with your medications. If you take medications check with your Pharmacist. Nonalcoholic drinks are just as tasty and should be available at any event.

It is heart warming when a friend or colleague seeks me out for advice on Diabetes and Hypertension management. Those are the sessions I enjoy most. After talking about calories , foods with higher sodium content and such things I spent some time on self reflection. It is hard for the teacher to practice what she teaches, isn't it? It is easy to dole out advice solicited or not. Making life changes that improve your health and sticking to these changes is not easy. What do you find is the hardest to follow through with. My greatest struggle is exercise. My excuse is time, there is never enough hours in a day.
