🇨🇦 Canada Introduces New Study Flexibility for Work Permit Holders

Eligible foreign nationals holding a valid Canadian work permit may now study in a course or program lasting up to six months without applying for a separate study permit.

This temporary measure can help workers upgrade their skills, obtain professional credentials and prepare for higher-skilled employment opportunities in Canada.

The exemption remains valid until the work permit expires or the public policy ends, whichever comes first. The policy is scheduled to expire on December 31, 2027.

You can study in Canada without a study permit right now. Most people are about to use it wrong.

A temporary public policy took effect September 4, 2026. If you hold a valid work permit — open or employer-specific — and your program is six months or less, no study permit is required. No application, no fee, no letter from IRCC. Your work permit is the proof. It runs to December 31, 2027, and no CAQ is needed in Quebec.

Now the part that gets skipped:

▪️ Study full-time under this policy and those months do not count toward Canadian Experience Class
▪️ No CRS points for that time
▪️ Nothing counts toward a PGWP
▪️ The exemption ends when your work permit ends — not when your course ends
▪️ A program longer than six months doesn't qualify, even if you only attend for six

Ten months into a twelve-month CEC clock, a full-time six-month certificate leaves you at ten months when you go to file. The cost never shows up at enrolment. It shows up when you count.

If you're building experience toward PR: keep it part-time, check your permit expiry against your course end date, and ask before you accept anything with a co-op placement.
