Good gear-care habits start with training.

As new firefighters develop the skills they'll rely on throughout their careers, understanding the importance of properly cleaning and drying bunker gear is an important part of that education.

It's encouraging to see the Junta Nacional de Bomberos de Chile investing in equipment and training practices at its National Firefighters Academy that support cleaner gear and firefighter safety from the very beginning.

We'd also like to recognize Alex Ratinoff and the team at Improfor for their efforts in bringing advanced gear-care solutions to Chile's fire service.

We're proud to contribute to this commitment and support the next generation of firefighters.

Has your bunker gear cleaning process kept up with what we now know about clean gear?
New guidelines have changed the conversation. Technology has changed what equipment can do. Testing has given us a better understanding of what actually improves cleaning performance.
It may be time to take another look at how your department washes and dries its gear.

Getting clean gear starts with selecting the right wash cycle.

Our extractors are programmed with dedicated wash cycles for both outer shells and inner liners, helping ensure each component receives the appropriate cleaning process. For gear exposed to heavier contamination, enhanced wash cycles provide additional cleaning time to address increased soil levels.

Using the touchscreen controls, fire departments can easily navigate between wash cycle options and select the program that best matches the condition of the gear being cleaned.

Choosing the correct cycle is a simple step that can improve cleaning effectiveness, support gear longevity, and help maintain PPE performance.

Ram Air's Special Operations gear dryers are designed to accommodate a variety of equipment, including bunker gear and immersion suits. With adjustable drying positions, these units can be configured to fit a wide range of immersion suit sizes while promoting efficient airflow throughout the garment.

One unique advantage of drying immersion suits upside down is improved water drainage. Since many suits include attached boots and gloves, moisture can collect in these areas when hung traditionally. By inverting the suit, water drains naturally while forced airflow helps accelerate the drying process from top to bottom.

The result is a more efficient drying process and gear that is ready when it's needed most.

Choosing the right extractor size is about more than the total number of bunker gear sets your department owns.

One of the most common misconceptions is that an extractor should be sized to wash all of your gear in as few loads as possible. In reality, it's just as important to consider the smallest loads you'll need to wash. Extractors are designed to perform best when loaded to capacity. If a machine is too large for the load, it may not achieve proper mechanical action or extraction performance.

In this video, we explain why load size matters and how combining different extractor capacities can provide more flexibility for departments. For example, two 20 lb extractors may offer greater versatility than a single 40 lb machine, ensuring you can properly clean gear whether you're washing two sets or four.

Our heated dryers increase ambient air temperature by 25 to 30°F, staying safely under the 120°F cutoff, ensuring your process remains compliant with the NFPA 1850 standards that took effect in January 2026.

Is your department skipping wash cycles because gear takes too long to dry? Our heated gear dryer is designed to remove that excuse by drying bunker gear in approximately one hour.

By using an open, forced-air design, we target high-volume airflow to the areas that hold the most water, like shoulders and underarms, all while the gear remains in a static position to prevent mechanical wear and tear. Whether you need the power of a heated dryer or an ambient air solution depends on your specific climate and gear requirements.

Did you know an NFPA-compliant wash cycle changes the water a minimum of five times? For departments that need to use a wall drain but want the 10-second drainage speed of a gravity system, a drain trough is an excellent solution.

This setup allows you to convert a gravity drain machine into a pump drain or direct water to a floor drain several feet away. Plus, the built-in trap catches foreign objects before they reach your station's plumbing.

Enhance your gear cleaning process with the automated detergent pump options available for our extractors. These pumps connect directly to the back of the machine, allowing the extractor to call for detergent and ensure the correct volume is dosed at the appropriate time during every wash cycle.

By utilizing a multi-headed pump, you can dispense up to three different detergents, which is ideal for chemicals that are not premixed and require specific ratios, such as 3 oz of one chemical and 2 oz of another. This system also accommodates specialized needs, such as adding a sanitizer for bloodborne pathogen cycles. Installation is managed via the terminal block, with specific ports designated for regular detergents (port 6) and sanitizing solutions (port 7) to help streamline your decontamination process.

Properly loading your extractor is essential for effective bunker gear cleaning.

In this video, Kellen explains why load size matters and how NFPA guidance now considers both weight and drum volume. The standard is one piece of bunker gear per cubic foot of drum space to ensure proper movement, cleaning action, and performance.

Overloading reduces cleaning effectiveness, while underloading can impact spin speed and G-force, both of which affect contaminant removal.

Get the load right to help your extractor perform at its best.
