Scams involving POS systems, such as Moneris or Square, are becoming more frequent.

Here are some common scams to be aware of:
📞The "Terminal Test" Phone Scam: A fraudster calls front-line staff claiming to be from Moneris customer support or the company’s internal IT department. They tell the employee they need to run a "test" on the payment terminal to resolve an error. They walk the employee through manually typing a credit card number to process a "purchase," and then instruct them to issue a corresponding "refund" to a different card controlled by the fraudster. The business is left liable for the stolen funds and eventual chargebacks
💾The Customer "Manual Entry" Loophole: While paying in a store, a fraudster inserts a dummy card into the Moneris machine. When it fails, they slyly hit buttons on the keypad to bypass the chip and manually type in a stolen credit card number. If the merchant hasn't locked manual entry behind an administrator password, the machine approves the transaction. Weeks later, Moneris forces a chargeback against the business once the real cardholder reports the fraud.
🚩The Distraction Refund Scam: While retail staff are distracted, a fraudster gains physical access to the Moneris terminal. They quickly navigate the terminal menu to issue a massive manual "refund" directly back onto their own debit or credit card. Merchants can stop this by enabling an Admin Passcode on the terminal for all manual entries and refunds
🧾The Review of Charges: The fraudster calls your business claiming to be from the POS business. They will ask for your online login information to “check if a credit charge went through”. Once they have access to this information they can steal your funds. POS companies will never call you for your log in information.

📌Pro Tip: When in doubt, end the call, and call your client specialist.
