Good evening. Not much new for repairs in the last few weeks. A lot of machines are in service. I did have 1 machine that has been a somewhat night mare. A baby lock jazz 2. Issue with the tension assembly which causes loose stitching as you may all know. It can also cause skipped stitches. So what is the issue, is it the tension causing the issue or is it the skipped stitches causing the loose tension? In this case it was both. So where to begin, start by using 2 different color threads. This way you can see it is the upper tension or lower tension causing the loose threads. Set the upper tension to 3 or 4 on the dial and then make sure the lower tension in the bobbin case is set correctly. The bobbin case should drop while holding the tail of the thread about 3 to 4 inches. Once this is set move onto the timing of the machine. The issue with the one I was working on the timing appeared to be correct. Perfect straight stitches and the tension was perfect after the adjustments. Move it to zig zag and the thread would be loose and skipped stitches. I had to rest the timing by making small adjustments over many attempts to dial it in. With this machine and it may not be others of the same model the wider the stitch length the looser the tension had to be to get the right stitch. Not something that usually happens once the tension is correct. Many hours later the machine is now working well and will back with the owner for new projects. Sometimes the machines just do not follow the set up rules that most machines would. Take care and have a great rest of the summer.

Good evening. The singer surger is fixed. The issue was the lower looper. The thread from this looper goes over top of the upper looper. The thread was going under the upper looper not allowing the completion of the stitch. With some minor adjustments the machine is working fantastic. Ready for more sewing projects for the owner of this machine.

Good evening and Happy safe holidays .I have had a few machines in for service and issues with stitch tangles. So issue with stitches. If there is a ball on top of the material the tension is too tight for the upper thread. If there is a birds nest of thread under the material the upper tension is too loose. Both these issues can be caused from the lower bobbin tension being either tight or loose. If you have an older style machine with a metal bobbin case the case should be allowed to hang and drop about 3 to 5 cm before stopping. Tension is good if it does not drop at all then it is too tight. The issues on a machine today was a birds nest under the material. I checked the tensions for the upper and lower bobbin. They appeared to be correct. Still had the issue. Further investigation and the inspection of the lower hook and bobbin case holder showed the plastic bobbin case holder was missing a small section broken off that was causing the upper thread to get caught and not make the full loop. A new bobbin case holder has been ordered to correct the problem. Take care and travel safe this holiday season.

Good morning. It has been a while since the last posting. Lots of machines in for service but nothing of note until today. Newer Pfaff home machine in for a skipped stitch issue and thread bunching. A different shop wanted to take the machine apart to fix the timing issue of the skipped stitches. Makes perfect sense this is the issue. I did some further investigation and the timing was correct. So what can cause this issue. It turned out to be the wrong needles were being used in the machine. The needles look almost identical and may have worked well in most machines for the difference. This machine tolerance was just too close for the small amount of the difference. When manually turning the machine with the wrong needles in it you can hear the hook tick against the needle when doing a zig zag stitch. With the correct needle the machine works like new. if you are having issues with your machine take a look at the basics first. Is the needle bent? Even a slight bend will cause issues. Is it the right needles for your machine? Is the bobbin in correctly? Is the thread on the bobbin wound correctly? I have seen industrial machines with the thread very loose on the lower bobbin and causes all kinds of issues. Have a great week to all.

Good morning. Lots of repairs but nothing out of the ordinary except for the last machine that came in. Issue the lower bobbin plastic case keeps popping out of place when the machine is running. For those not familiar with the top loading plastic bobbins, the bobbins sit in a plastic bobbin holder case under the feed dog cover were the needle goes up and down. This case has a magnet that helps hold it in place which is why plastic bobbins are used. Here is the issue if the case becomes dislodged while the machine is running fast the case moves and the needle pierces holes into it. After this happens a few times it creates a lower edge on the bottom of the plastic holder from the punch holes and then the case will not sit in the metal circular race properly. basically it creates a hump causing the holder to lift out of the race causing more damage from the needle. Check the plastic bobbin holder for damage from the needle strikes and this may save you a visit to the repair center. The part should be replaced if has a lot of damage or will no longer sit properly. When the machine turns you will see the black bobbin case rise and fall and hear a clicking sound when this happens.
Have a great weekend

Good morning. The industrial machines have arrived. I will be posting pictures of the machines and issues that I have found. 1 of the machines I believe to be a barn find. Layers of dirt and bugs inside it. The issue is the needle will not go into the hole for attaching it. May need a new needle bar. Either way the needle bar has to come out for me to check the hole and attach the screw. The other machine is an old walking foot with no reverse. It is used in the repair of horse blankets. from the initial inspection it is full of sand and water. It does turn and the parts seem to move correctly but it will need to be taken apart to clean out the contamination. Pictures will follow. Have a great weekend

Good evening. I have had lots of machines coming in for repair and service. It has been interesting the issues of broken needle bar screws. They have been snapped off in the holders. Very surprising to me that a part this important is stripping and jamming then breaking. Some of these parts are getting hard to find. The other issue has been wiring. Please if you are not sure about the wiring take it to someone who knows what is right and wrong. Worst case maybe burn up a foot controller or motor or start a fire. I just finished fixing ,wiring done to a singer feather weight. bare wires are all most touching each other. The wires are not correctly installed in the plug in correctly. Just a few of the issues this week. To all sewers out there keep making your projects, keep the machine bobbin area clean and have fun.
Take care
Richard

Good evening. 2 machines coming tomorrow. A couple old industrial machines used in the repair of horse blankets. Both machines are locked up and not working. Should be interesting trying to work out what would cause the machines to lock up. stay tuned for updates on the repair of these machines in the next few days. Take care

Good evening. I have been repairing a lot of machines that need basic cleaning and adjustments. I did get a pfaff 125 machine in with an issue I have not seen. The pressure foot lost all of the spring tension to keep the foot down. A different shop told the owner of the machine that it needed new springs and parts for the machine. What I found was the pressure foot spring was stuck. all the parts were in perfect condition and needed the machine cleaned and the pressure bar removed cleaned and put back together. The machine is working as new again. Always worth a second opinion when it comes to any repair being a sewing machine or any other item needed repair.

Good morning to all. This is just an information post. I have been seeing a lot of computer run sewing machines. If you are looking into purchasing a used one or even a new machine check what the cost of the main computer board will cost, or if it is still even available. I have just bought machines with computer problems and the boards no longer available or cost in the $700 to $900 dollar range. Be aware please.

Take care all
Richard

Good evening. A new old vintage machine for a full service and an electrical motor addition. This German made machine was built in the mid 1930,s to the best of my knowledge. It is a very heavy all metal geared sewing machine. The name is Anker RZ. It is probably one of the nicest vintage machines I have looked at. Not fancy in terms of decoration but a well designed all metal geared machine that makes a great stitch. The machine can handle industrial needles which means it can use the heavier industrial threads. opens the uses up to whatever I feel like making. Pictures of the machine to follow. It will not be a full restoration because it is already operating but a complete service and set up of the machine.

Good evening. I just picked up a newer Kenmore machine with 20 different stitch options. The owner did not know what was going on with it. Just that it made a loud grinding nose. After going through the machine to locate the issue I decided that the case needed to be taken apart. The issue I found was thread wrapped around the lower motor belt drive pulley. It was causing the upper drive belt gear to push against the side of the case. I wonder how many machines get turfed rather than get a service on them. The machine is working smoothly and perfectly. ready for more years of service. Just my 2 cents if you are not sure what is wrong with your sewing machine get a shop to do an inspection to see if the machine is worth repairing. I do free evaluations on machines to see if they are worth fixing or just need a service to get them back into working condition. Take care
