I think work-life balance is a myth.
Or at least the version we’re sold, where everything gets equal attention all the time.
Life doesn’t seem to work that way.
Instead, I think life moves in seasons. And every season asks us to choose.
Right now, I’m choosing work.
I’m in Europe helping launch a brand-new global organization. It’s exciting, meaningful work, and I’m exactly where I want to be professionally.
It also means missing part of summer with my boys.
Of course I wish I could be in two places at once.
But I can’t.
So I’ve made this choice intentionally, knowing that in a couple of weeks I’ll be home and August will be all about family, camp, slow mornings, and soaking up the rest of summer together.
For years, I chased the idea that I should be able to do it all, all at once.
Now I think the better question is:
What deserves my full attention in this season?
The same is true in our careers.
Sometimes the next step isn’t trying to balance everything perfectly.
Sometimes it’s choosing to get clear on what you want.
Choosing to stop settling.
Choosing to invest in yourself so that your future looks different from your present.
There will always be trade-offs.
The magic is making them consciously instead of by default.
