If you used a Windows computer in the early '90s, you probably remember SkiFree.

You'd be happily skiing down the mountain, dodging trees and feeling pretty good about yourself...

And then HE appeared.

The Abominable Snow Monster.

I tried to escape him. I TRIED.

It wasn't until years later that I learned something that would have been extremely useful to my childhood self:

YOU COULD ACTUALLY ESCAPE THE YETI.

Apparently, pressing F made your skier go faster.

Where was this information in 1993?!

So today's highly important SGT technology discussion is this:

Did you know you could escape the SkiFree Yeti, or did you also spend your childhood accepting your inevitable Yeti-related death?

Why Is My Wi-Fi Great Here… and Terrible Over There?

Ever notice your Wi-Fi works perfectly in one room, but a few steps away you're suddenly down to one bar?

It's a common problem, and it doesn't necessarily mean there's anything wrong with your internet connection.

Wi-Fi signals can be affected by:

Distance — The farther you are from your router or access point, the weaker the signal can become.

Walls and floors — Concrete, brick, metal, and other dense materials can make it harder for Wi-Fi signals to travel through a building.

Interference — Nearby wireless networks and other electronics can compete for the same airspace.

Router or access point placement — Where your equipment is located can make a surprisingly big difference in your coverage.

So, do you just need a Wi-Fi booster?

Maybe, but not always.

Depending on the space, the better solution could be repositioning equipment, adding or relocating a wireless access point, adjusting the network configuration, or improving the overall Wi-Fi coverage.

Do You Actually Need to Eject a USB Drive?

We've all done it.

You're finished with a USB drive, so you reach over and pull it out, only to wonder:

"Was I supposed to eject that first?"

The good news is that modern computers are generally much better at handling removable storage than they used to be.

But that doesn't mean the Eject button is completely obsolete.

If your computer is still writing, copying, or saving data to the drive when you remove it, you could end up with corrupted or incomplete files.

The safest habit?

Make sure any files you're working with are saved and closed.

Wait for any transfers to finish.

Use Eject/Safely Remove before unplugging the drive when possible.

It only takes a few seconds, and it's a lot less frustrating than discovering the file you needed didn't save properly.

Sometimes the old advice is still good advice.

Technology Percussion: The Original IT Department

Remember when troubleshooting meant:

The strategic cable wiggle.
Blowing into Nintendo cartridges.
Smacking the TV remote.
Giving the computer a gentle tap.

To be fair, checking a loose cable is still a perfectly valid troubleshooting step. The rest? Let's leave those in the '90s.

Modern devices prefer updates, diagnostics, and proper maintenance over percussive repairs.

Expect internet interruptions – Even if your power stays on, your internet provider may experience outages.

Back up important files – Cloud backups or an external backup can save you from losing valuable data.

If lightning is very close or you experience frequent power fluctuations, it's safest to unplug sensitive electronics until the storm passes.

Your Password Isn't Enough Anymore

Most people think a strong password is enough to keep their accounts secure.

Unfortunately, if a password is stolen, guessed, or reused from another website, a cybercriminal may still be able to access your account.

That's where Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) comes in.

2FA adds a second layer of security, such as:
✔️ A code sent to your phone
✔️ An authentication app
✔️ A biometric check, like your fingerprint

Even if someone gets your password, they still can't log in without that second verification step.

It's one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your email, banking, and business accounts.
