If you are new to Italian w**e, Tuscany is one of the easiest places to begin.
Not because every Tuscan w**e tastes the same but because Sangiovese gives you a welcoming way into Chianti Classico and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
We loved Rocca delle Macìe’s Chianti Classico Riserva for nearly a decade before visiting the family estate. Sitting at the table with Sergio and Daniela Zingarelli made the bottle feel different. We could taste the people and place behind it.
And Tuscany reminded us that a memorable bottle does not have to be famous or expensive. Sometimes it is waiting beside a plate of bruschetta.

Italian w**e can feel impossible. Hundreds of regions, grapes, and labels and you just want to know where to begin.
After more than two decades of traveling through Italy, we would start with five doors:
🍷 Tuscany for food-friendly reds 🍷 Valpolicella for Amarone 🍷 Piedmont for Nebbiolo 🍷 Mount Etna for volcanic energy 🍷 Alto Adige for vibrant mountain whites
Which one would you try first?

Tiny wasps are helping protect the w**e grapes at Clos Apalta.

Flowers planted among the vines attract parasitic wasps that help control harmful insects naturally. Together with the estate’s native forest and vineyard biodiversity, they form a tiny but important defense system.

It is a reminder that the health of a w**e begins long before harvest, in the balance of the vineyard itself.

Would you have guessed that wasps could be useful in a vineyard?

Can you identify a w**e grape by its leaf? 🍃🍷

Before the grapes ripen, the leaves are already leaving clues.

Look closely at three things: the overall shape, the depth of the cuts, and the opening where the leaf meets the stem.

🍇 Cabernet Sauvignon: deeply cut lobes with enclosed openings that look almost like eyes 🍇 Merlot: a more open, maple-like shape 🍇 Chardonnay: broader and rounder, with shallower cuts

Identifying vines by their leaves is called ampelography. A leaf is only one clue, but once you know what to notice, a vineyard begins to look completely different.

Save this for your next w**e-country visit. Which leaf fooled you?

How do great w**eries think? At Clos Apalta, we found the answer isn’t a single idea. It’s thousands of deliberate decisions. Seventeen micro-terroirs. Over eighty individual w**es resting in barrel before the blend even begins. Excellence, built one choice at a time. 🎥 Full story on YouTube, link in our bio.

“Coopetition.” That’s the word one Walla Walla w**emaker uses to describe why the region’s w**e keeps getting better. When your neighbors are your competition and your quality bar, everyone wins. Even Dunham.

This is why a glass of Walla Walla w**e means something. The whole region holds itself to a standard, so you’re never getting an average pour. 🍷

Only about eight barrels of this w**e are made each year. And every vintage is honored with a different piece of Eric’s artwork.

But the most remarkable part may be what happens after bottling.

Years later, this w**e is still revealing something new, including its underlying cherry-cola character.

Some w**es reward patience.
