Due to a major cut in nomination spots, the BC PNP has tightened its programs. Healthcare workers, entrepreneurs, and high-impact candidates will be prioritized, while new student streams are on pause and Early Childhood Educator Assistants are no longer included in targeted draws. Only around 100 invitations will go to candidates in the Skills Immigration pool. Find out how these changes could impact you:

BC PNP is undergoing major changes in 2025 following a sharp reduction in its nomination allocation by the federal government.

The Canadian government has extended Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) program deadline to March 31, 2026. Previously, Ukrainians under the CUAET program were required to apply for work or study permit extensions before March 31, 2025. However, many Ukrainians faced a significant hurdle—passport expirations. Without a valid passport, they could not apply for status extensions, leaving them at risk of losing their legal status in Canada. Now, with the new March 31, 2026 deadline, those waiting for passport renewals will have a chance to secure their status once their new documents are issued.

BC PNP is facing significant changes in 2025 due to a substantial reduction in the number of nominations allocated by the federal government. The total number of nominations available for B.C. in 2025 is 4,000, marking a 50% decrease from 2024. This reduction is expected to impact processing times, invitation rounds, and overall program operations. Applicants Should Prepare for Longer Processing Times and Work Permit Extensions.

The government is cutting the projected number of new permanent residents from 485,000 this year to 395,000 in 2025, with further cuts to 380,000 in 2026 and 365,000 in 2027.

Under the previous plan released last November, Canada was expected to admit about 500,000 in both 2025 and 2026.

Significant changes are coming for the spouses of foreign workers. Later this year, IRCC will limit work permit eligibility to spouses of foreign workers employed in management or professional occupations, or in sectors with recognized labor shortages, under Canada’s work permit programs (TFWP and IMP). Work Permits for Ukrainians can be extended until 2028. Is Immigration Canada attempting to reduce the number of Humanitarian and Compassionate applications?

One possible reason for the work permit extensions could be an effort by IRCC to relieve pressure on the H&C program.

The demand to immigrate to Alberta is far higher than the province can accommodate. As a result, to help manage the incredible demand, processing times and maximum nominations for 2024, AAIP has adopted new guidelines for the Alberta Opportunity Steam, Rural Renewal Stream and Accelerated Tech Pathway, similar to those used in the Tourism and Hospitality Stream.
Each month a targeted number of applications will be accepted into the pool from where AAIP will draw.
Eligibility criteria for the Alberta Opportunity Stream, Rural Renewal Stream, Accelerated Tech Pathway and Tourism and Hospitality Stream have not changed.
Effective June 11, 2024, the following streams and pathways have adopted the new approach:
1. Alberta Opportunity Stream
2. Rural Renewal Stream
3. Accelerated Tech Pathway
4. Tourism and Hospitality Stream
Applications will be accepted monthly, starting on the following dates: June 11, July 9, August 13, September 10, October 8, November 5, and December 10
When a stream or pathway monthly application target is reached, no further applications will be accepted until the next date.

An update on the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP):

IRCC has started sending invitations to potential sponsors who have previously filled out an interest to sponsor form. Invitations will be sent by email over the next 2 weeks to randomly selected potential sponsors from the remaining pool of 2020 interest to sponsor forms. If you receive an invitation to apply, you must electronically submit your PGP application through the Permanent Residence Portal or the Representative Permanent Residence Portal by the deadline mentioned in your invitation. If you submitted an interest to sponsor form in 2020 but didn’t receive an invitation to apply during the 2020, 2021, 2022 or 2023 intakes, make sure to monitor the email account you used on that form, including your spam and junk mail folders.
