🤔 What’s wrong with my smooth hydrangea? 🤔

If you’re growing smooth hydrangeas such as Annabelle or Incrediball and notice leaves that are twisted, puckered or tied together, you’re likely dealing with the Hydrangea Leaftier.

This tiny caterpillar ties young leaves together while they’re still developing and feeds from the safety of its leafy shelter. The damage can look alarming, but it’s usually cosmetic and rarely threatens the health of the plant.

You can simply open the leaves and remove the caterpillar or prune out the affected tip if desired.

Have you ever found hydrangea leaftier on your plants?

🍃 Remember the Trembling Aspen? 🌿 Meet its European cousin — the Swedish Columnar/Upright Aspen.

This is Populus tremula ‘Erecta’, a columnar selection of European aspen known for its narrow, upright form and constant leaf movement in the breeze.

It brings that same iconic shimmer you get from native trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides), but in a much tighter footprint — making it a great option where space is limited but you still want that soft, dynamic movement in the landscape.

Fast-growing, architectural and always moving with the wind.

Would you plant the classic or the columnar version? 👀

🌿 Boxwoods giving you trouble? 🌿

If you’re looking for an alternative, don’t overlook Spirea. Varieties like Magic Carpet and Goldmound can be planted as a low hedge, trimmed to keep a tidy shape and bring something boxwoods can’t—season-long colour and beautiful blooms.

No, they’re not evergreen, but they’re tough, easy to grow, and can make a fantastic replacement in the right landscape.

Would you consider swapping your boxwoods for spirea?

🌲The Norway Spruce (Picea abies) is a classic evergreen known for its fast growth, pyramidal shape and distinctive drooping branch tips.

🌲A favourite for windbreaks, privacy screens and large landscape. This hardy evergreen can reach 60–80 ft tall and 25–40 ft wide at maturity. Give it room to grow and it will reward you with year-round beauty for generations.

One of the hardest things to do in landscaping is look past what a plant is today and picture what it can become.

This mature Bridal Wreath Spirea (Spiraea × vanhouttei) is a perfect example. In spring, its graceful arching branches are absolutely covered in white blooms, creating one of the most spectacular floral displays in the landscape.

The younger plants at the nursery may not look like much yet, but every mature specimen starts somewhere. Plant for the future and you’ll be rewarded for years to come.

Mature size: approximately 6–8 ft tall and 8–10 ft wide. Best grown in full sun for the heaviest flowering.

🍃There’s something special about the Trembling Aspen (Populus tremuloides) 🍃

Its leaves are always in motion, catching even the slightest breeze and creating that signature shimmer in the landscape.

A fast-growing native Canadian tree, naturally found across much of North America, it brings movement, texture and a natural, effortless feel to the landscape.

At maturity, it typically reaches about 20–25 m (65–80 ft) tall with a spread of roughly 8–12 m (25–40 ft), making it a strong choice for naturalized areas, shelterbelts or larger landscape spaces.

Would you plant a row of Trembling Aspen in your landscape?

🔍Don’t forget this important June garden task 👀

If you have boxwoods, now is the time to inspect them for box tree moth activity. Check inside the shrub for chewed leaves, webbing, frass and small green caterpillars with black heads.

Catching an infestation early can make all the difference.

🌲Not every landscape has room for a giant spruce! 🌲

Columnar Norway Spruce (Picea abies ‘Cupressina’) gives you that classic Norway Spruce look in a much narrower form. Its upright growth habit makes it an excellent choice for privacy screens, property lines and smaller landscapes where space is limited.

Would you plant one in your yard?
