Local companies supporting other local companies.

One of the best parts of being a Calgary Construction Association member is who you meet. Other owners, other operators, people who also decided to build something in this city.

High Torque Mobile Mechanics is one of them. They bring the shop to you, and they do it well. Good to know our gloves are on their hands while they work.

Walk the floor of a food processing plant in Canada and look at who's actually doing the work — trimming, sorting, packing, running machines. Chances are good it's a woman.

Food manufacturing is one of the few corners of Canadian industry where women aren't a small minority. And yet the work gloves in the supply cabinet were almost certainly patterned for a man's hand.

Across all of Canadian manufacturing, women hold about 29% of jobs. 41.1% of people employed in food processing are women.

It's an honor that our brand, Spectra Supply, was included in Karen Korellis Reuther's new book, "MAN-MADE: How we designed a world that leaves women out, and how we can make it right".

If you don't know Karen: four decades as an industrial designer, global creative director at Nike, VP of creative direction and innovation at Reebok, now lecturing at Harvard's Graduate School of Design. She has sat in the rooms where products get decided, and Man-Made is her account of how those rooms kept designing for one body and calling it "universal."

Somewhere in there, between the CPR manikins built on male anatomy and the sneakers that are just men's shoes made smaller, she includes products rectifying these problems, including a glove company from Alberta trying to do it differently. That's us.

Spectra Supply launched their women's work glove line because we kept watching women on job sites get handed gear that didn't fit and told to make it work. Karen reinforces this concern: if PPE is not worn and worn right, it endangers our female workers.

Karen, thank you. For the research, for four decades of paying attention, and for deciding a small company in Alberta belonged in the story.

Over 30% Of Farm Operators Are Women

The 2021 Census of Agriculture recorded 79,795 female farm operators in Canada — 30.4% of all farm operators, and the first increase in the number of women farming in 30 years. Alberta ranks second in the country with 18,525 female farm operators, about 23% of the national total.

Nearly one in three Canadian farms is now run, at least in part, by a woman. And the products sitting on the shelf at most farm supply stores are built for men. This includes work gloves.

Ask someone outside the province what Alberta is known for and they'll probably say oil and gas. Fair enough. But drive twenty minutes out of Calgary in any direction and you'll see the other Alberta: canola fields, feedlots, fence lines that run to the horizon, and the largest cattle herd in the country.

Agriculture is one of the industries that built this province, and it's still one of the most dangerous places to work with your hands.

Real talk from real questions we've been receiving.

We heard it again at a Stampede event — a tradeswoman told us her nails keep cutting right through her gloves. Her gloves were just not holding up to her manicured nails.

Spectra Supply was fortunate enough to attend Dream & Build 2026. Three days at BCIT: British Columbia Institute of Technology with tradeswomen from across Canada, put on by Build a Dream. 🙌

Our co-founder, Sally Morse, took the stage and talked about building Spectra from the ground up. Not the polished version of the story — the real one. The abrupt career change, the detours, and what still drives her mission.

We also had Spectra Work Gloves on full display with other women's workwear AWSAM (Alliance of Women's Safety Apparel Manufacturers) brands. One of the highlights of the Friday night was the women's workwear showcase and connecting with the incredible women who inspire us to create gear that actually fits.

Thank you to Build a Dream and BCIT for creating the space and to every tradeswoman who showed up, stopped by, and shared their story. What an inspiring three days!
