Many IMG doctors spend months researching Canada… only to feel more confused.
Why?
Because physician immigration is not one process — it’s immigration, licensing, career planning, and timing all working together.
And misunderstanding this can cost doctors years.
If you’re an internationally trained physician trying to understand the Canadian pathway, this is the part nobody explains clearly.
Immigration gets you into Canada. Licensing gets you eligible. Strategy moves you forward. Follow North Trek Immigration for IMG immigration and licensing advice.

Where are doctors actually needed most?
Physician demand is not the same across Canada.
Some provinces face stronger shortages, more rural recruitment, and greater need for family physicians, psychiatry, emergency medicine, and primary care.
Province selection can influence:
✔️ Immigration opportunities
✔️ Licensing pathways
✔️ Employer recruitment
✔️ Timeline to practice
✔️ Long-term physician demand
For many IMGs, choosing the right province is one of the most important decisions in the journey.

Many IMG physicians ask if Express Entry is the best pathway to Canada — but physician immigration is rarely one simple route.
For International Medical Graduates, success depends on aligning immigration strategy with licensing requirements, province selection, physician demand, and long-term career planning.
Some doctors qualify through Express Entry, while others benefit more from Provincial Nominee Programs, employer-supported work permits, or rural physician pathways.
The right pathway depends on your specialty, experience, and where you realistically qualify to practice in Canada.

Most physicians believe licensing starts after immigration.
It doesn’t.
For International Medical Graduates, licensing often begins long before moving to Canada.
Credential verification, exams, province selection, and pathway planning can all impact your future ability to practice.
This is where many IMGs lose time — not because they lack qualifications, but because they misunderstand the sequence.
Canada’s physician pathway is not just immigration.
It is licensing + strategy + province selection + timing.
Understanding the system early can save years.

Canada needs doctors — but physician shortage does not automatically mean an easy pathway.
Canada has nearly 100,000 practicing physicians, yet millions of Canadians still lack access to a family doctor. Physician demand continues to grow due to an aging population, retirements, burnout, and rural shortages.
So why do many International Medical Graduates still struggle?
Because physician immigration is not just about demand.
It’s about understanding:
✔️ Medical licensing
✔️ Province selection
✔️ Immigration pathways
✔️ Healthcare workforce realities
The doctors who succeed are often the ones who understand how the system works early.

Important IRCC Update (May 4) 🚨

Up to 33,000 temporary workers are expected to receive permanent residence by 2027 — with 20,000 in 2026.

But before you get excited, here’s the reality 👇

This is NOT a new PR pathway.
There is:
❌ No new program
❌ No application intake
❌ No way to apply if you haven’t already

👉 This is simply faster processing for applications already in the system through programs like the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) and Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP).

So who benefits?
✔️ Workers who already applied
✔️ Those living in smaller communities for 2+ years
✔️ Applicants in existing pilot programs

Who does NOT benefit right now?
❌ Most PGWP holders
❌ People who haven’t submitted a PR application
❌ Applicants in major cities waiting for new pathways

This is very different from the 2021 TR to PR program — no new spots are opening.

💡 Bottom line:
If you haven’t already applied for PR, this announcement does not change your options. Your best strategy is still through Express Entry or a PNP pathway.

⚠️ Don’t fall for misinformation about “new PR programs” — there aren’t any in this announcement.

Canada issued 28,125 Permanent Residence invitations in just ONE month — and this wasn’t luck 👇
✨ Who got invited?
✔️ French-speaking candidates (CRS as low as 400)
✔️ Skilled trades workers
✔️ Healthcare professionals & early childhood educators
✔️ Candidates with Canadian work experience (CEC)
✔️ Tech workers & provincial nominees
✔️ International graduates already in Canada
📊 Breakdown:
🔹 Express Entry: 15,797 invitations
🔹 Ontario: 7,628 (BIGGEST player this month)
🔹 Quebec: 2,555
🔹 Alberta: 866+
🔹 BC: 484
🔹 Atlantic Canada: 455
🔹 Manitoba: 340
💡 What does this mean for YOU?
Canada is NOT selecting randomly anymore.
They are choosing candidates who match:
✔️ In-demand occupations
✔️ Language skills (especially French!)
✔️ Canadian experience
✔️ Regional & employer needs
👉 Translation: If your profile is aligned, your chances are STRONG.
⚠️ An invitation is NOT automatic PR — your application still needs to be solid.
🚀 At North Trek Immigration, we help you:
✔️ Build a winning profile
