If you could solve one urban challenge right now, what would it be? 🏙️

We asked our CoWorkers the same question, and their answers ranged from small-scale planning fixes to big-picture issues that shape how we live, move, and connect every day.

Since 2021, CivicWorks has been one of the highest-volume applicants in Calgary, responsible for roughly 11% of all Land Use Redesignation applications. With every project, we champion the fundamentals of great design to help shape better spaces for Calgarians and build stronger, more connected communities.

Our work spans the full spectrum of city-building: from Missing Middle housing in established neighbourhoods, to mixed use developments along Main Streets and community corridors, to large-scale Master Planning that guides the future of districts.

Swipe through to explore some of the key stats behind our work since 2021!

We’re excited to see what comes next, and where we’ll go together.

🚲 A bike rack is more than just a place to lock up. Good design gives riders confidence to leave their bikes behind.

✅ Location: Easy to spot, out of the way of pedestrians, with some shelter from the elements.
✅ Visibility: Well-lit, high-traffic areas with “eyes on the street” to deter theft.
✅ Functionality: Strong, secure, and versatile enough for all kinds of bikes.

A thoughtfully designed bike rack isn’t just infrastructure - it’s an invitation to ride.

🏟️ Event centres around the world are no longer just single-use buildings for concerts or sports.

With community growth and needs changing, planners and developers have been rethinking these spaces, and today, event centres are evolving into mixed-use districts that pulse with life year-round. From the O2 Arena in London or LA Live in Los Angeles, to the Calgary’s Entertainment + Culture District, these hubs are blending arenas with shops, plazas, and hospitality. The shift creates not only better event experiences, but also more vibrant, connected urban places that support local economies and communities.

Since 2011, Calgary has been growing its bike lane network, including new protected lanes in the City Centre and beyond.

But there’s still more to do! A safe, continuous, and connected system is needed to give cyclists of all abilities the confidence to ride.

A strong bike lane network benefits everyone, creating safer, more vibrant, and people friendly streets.

What are design guidelines and why do they matter?

Design guidelines help shape the look, feel, and function of our built environment. They are non-statutory documents and play a powerful role in guiding all types of development toward thoughtful, high-quality outcomes.

From city-wide frameworks to Main Street-specific guidance, these documents adapt to the unique character and needs of each place, supporting good urban design, smoother review processes, and better long-term city-building.

Smart guidelines help create stronger, more inclusive communities.💡

Community change is constant, and it brings exciting possibilities. From evolving built forms which reflect modern styles and cultures to expanded amenities like parks, public spaces, and transit options. As density increases, communities’ welcome people of all ages, wages, and stages, fostering a richer, more connected environment.

Community change sparks growth and opportunity.

Lincoln is a highly amenitized, 36-storey mixed-use tower contributing to the ongoing transformation of Victoria Park into a vibrant, connected community.

Currently under construction, the project features 277 residences, including over 10% three-bedroom homes and eight affordable housing units offered through a non-profit provider, ensuring more Calgarians can call the Beltline home.

Architecturally, Lincoln makes a bold statement at the intersection of 11 AV and 2 ST SW, with golden fins that rise dramatically up the façade. At street level, these fins frame a triple-height entry atrium, flanked by retail spaces that will activate the street and complement a high-quality public realm design.

When bike lanes are thoughtfully designed, people feel more confident riding, creating safer streets, healthier communities, and a more vibrant city for everyone.

✅ Visibility: Clear markings, signage, and lighting help ensure riders are easy to see.
✅ Connectivity: Bike lanes work best as part of a continuous network linking homes, schools, workplaces, and businesses.
✅ Protection: Safe bike lanes are a top priority for cyclists. The level of separation should respond to road conditions. More physical separation from traffic and pedestrians means safer riding, though it may require more space and increase costs.
✅ Accessibility: Lanes should be wide enough to accommodate all kinds of bikes, including cargo carriers and adaptive bikes.

A well-designed bike lane makes the whole city ride better!

How do different types of open spaces and parks contribute to a complete community? 🌳

From plazas that spark casual encounters, to greenways that weave neighbourhoods together, to playgrounds and dog parks that welcome all ages (and species), each type of open space adds its own layer of character and connection.

Equally important is ensuring these places are accessible to everyone through barrier-free design, free public programming, and welcoming environments that serve people of all ages, wages, and stages.
When thoughtfully integrated, parks and open spaces aren’t "extras" — they’re daily essentials that support public health, equity, and a stronger sense of belonging in our communities. 💫
