Last week Dr. Robert Ben and Rebecca Mercier attended the Canadian Glycomics Network - GlycoNet's Annual Symposium in beautiful and serene Canmore, Alberta.

Dr. Ben, a keynote speaker, gave an interesting presentation on how ice recrystallization inhibitors (IRIs), a carbohydrate-derived technology, can protect cell function during freezing by controlling ice crystal growth and improve cell stability post-thaw. Dr. Ben spoke about how IRIs could better serve cell therapy and regenerative medicine industries.

We thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the latest innovations in glycomics research. Thanks to everyone who stopped by the BioLife Solutions table.

Congratulations to Dr. Jason Acker on his acceptance of being a new Scientific Board Member at NSF ATP-Bio. 👏

ATP-Bio’s goals are to significantly expand the capacity to preserve and transport cells, tissues, organs, etc. through a collaborative effort focused on developing innovative and modern biopreservation technologies.

Dr. Acker is looking forward to applying his expertise in cryopreservation, stem cells, bioinformatics, and hematology to benefit the pioneering studies and programs at ATP-Bio.

Frozen may not mean stable…🧊

As cell and gene therapies scale, cryopreservation can’t be treated as a one-time development step. In real world manufacturing and distribution, routine handling creates small temperature fluctuations, known as transient warming events (TWEs), that can silently impact cell viability and potency.

If designing therapies to tolerate real world variability is the path to delivering consistent outcomes on a commercial scale, then the addition of ice recrystallization inhibitors (IRIs) may be the key. 🧬

A new study published in Cytotherapy investigates the functional impact of transient warming events (TWEs), which are brief warming and re-cooling cycles, on cryopreserved cord blood (CB) hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) grafts.

Using a controlled and operationally realistic TWE model, Canadian Blood Services and PanTHERA’s own Robert Ben systematically examine how temperature thresholds, cryopreservation solutions, DMSO concentration, and ice recrystallization influence post-thaw cell viability and stem cell graft potency.💡

The results demonstrate that ice recrystallization inhibitors (IRIs) provide strong protection against the damaging effects of ice crystal growth and can prevent ice recrystallization. 🛡️
