Tech Tip of the Week: Don't Let a Door Closer Become a Security Risk!

Did you know that seasonal temperature changes can affect how your building's doors close?

As temperatures drop, changes in hydraulic fluid viscosity and weather seals can affect door-closing performance. A door that worked perfectly in summer may suddenly close too slowly, slam shut, or fail to latch properly.

This week's tip: Take a quick walk around your facility and check that exterior doors close and latch securely without assistance.

Pay particular attention to doors equipped with access control systems. Even the best security technology can't protect an entrance if the door doesn't close properly!

A simple seasonal check can help prevent security vulnerabilities, unnecessary alarms, and costly service calls.

A little prevention today can make a big difference tomorrow!

Behind every great seniors living community are people who make a difference every single day.

The friendly face at reception. The maintenance team keeping everything running. The caregivers offering a reassuring smile. The dining staff who remember everyone's favourite meal.

It's these everyday moments of kindness and connection that turn a building into a place residents are proud to call home.

At PCS, we're fortunate to work alongside so many dedicated teams in seniors living communities across Canada, and we see the difference they make.

Let's give them some recognition!

Tech Tip of the Week: Check What Changed

When technology suddenly stops working, the problem isn’t always the equipment itself. Before replacing or resetting anything, ask one simple question:

“What changed?”

A recent network update, new Wi-Fi equipment, a moved device, changed password, power interruption, software update—or even another contractor working in the building—can affect connected systems.

Before troubleshooting, check:

- Was anything recently added, moved or upgraded?
- Were there network, Wi-Fi or power changes?
- Did another contractor recently work on the system?
- When was the last time everything was known to be working properly?

Small changes can have surprisingly big ripple effects. Knowing what changed can save staff hours of troubleshooting and help technicians get to the root cause much faster.

Technology doesn’t always have to be complicated—or behind the scenes. Sometimes, a little hands-on help can make a big difference.

Consider hosting a casual “Tap & Talk” Video Calling Clinic where residents can bring a tablet or use a community device and get help connecting with family and friends through FaceTime, Zoom, WhatsApp or another video-calling platform.

Staff or volunteers can help residents learn how to answer a video call, adjust the volume, position the camera, find contacts and start a call on their own. Using larger-screen tablets can make the experience even more comfortable for residents who may find smaller phones difficult to navigate.

The real benefit isn’t learning how to use a tablet—it’s what happens afterward. A resident who once waited for a phone call can now see a grandchild’s birthday, chat face-to-face with an old friend or simply say goodnight to family hundreds of kilometres away.

PCS Tech Tip: Keep the session relaxed, social and pressure-free. A cup of coffee and a little patience can turn a technology lesson into something residents genuinely look forward to.

Today, PCS recognizes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

We honour the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools, their families and their communities.

This day is an opportunity to listen, learn and reflect on the lasting impacts of the residential school system and the importance of reconciliation.

We encourage everyone to take time today to learn, reflect and honour the stories and experiences of Indigenous Peoples across Canada.

Every Child Matters.

Tech Tip of the Week: Watch for Condensation

The leaves aren’t the only things that change with the temperature!

As temperatures start to drop, the difference between warm indoor air and cooler exterior spaces can create condensation—especially around entrances, vestibules, parking areas and other locations where electronic equipment may be exposed to changing temperatures.

Moisture and electronics are never a great combination. Card readers, door entry equipment, cameras and other devices can develop intermittent issues long before there’s an obvious sign of a problem.

This fall, take a quick look at equipment near exterior areas. Check for moisture, fogging inside camera housings, corrosion, damaged seals or devices behaving inconsistently.

A little seasonal inspection now can help prevent a mysterious “Why isn’t this working?” call on a cold morning.
