🚨 FOREIGN NURSES: YOU DO NOT NEED A CANADIAN LICENCE TO GET PERMANENT RESIDENCE

Nurses lose years to one mistake: treating licensing and immigration as a queue instead of two parallel tracks. Licensing is what lets you practise. It is not what gets you PR, and many nurses complete licensing after they already hold permanent residence.
Pius, Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) with Chugo Immigration Services in Calgary, lays out both tracks and how to run them at the same time.
📊 THE DEMAND: The Canadian Nurses Association projects Canada needs roughly 60,000 additional nurses by 2030. Internationally educated nurses now make up about 16.8% of Canada's RN supply, up from 14.4% a year earlier, the fastest growth on record.
📋 THE LICENSING ROUTE:
1️⃣ NNAS (National Nursing Assessment Service) — mandatory first step for most IENs. Advisory Reports accepted by every Canadian nursing regulator except Quebec and the territories. Expedited service releases reports within 5 business days of all documents received, at a reduced fee of 750 Dollars
2️⃣ Language test
3️⃣ NCLEX-RN examination
4️⃣ Provincial college registration
⏳ Realistic timeline: 12 to 24 months, longer if bridging education is required. Start NNAS first because it is the slowest step.
💰 SALARIES (2026 published estimates, verify your own on Job Bank): RN national average roughly 85,000 to 105,000 Dollars, with sources placing the wider range at 75,000 to 125,000. Nurse practitioners above 130,000 in several provinces. LPNs commonly in the 60,000s and 70,000s.
📍 WHERE TO TARGET: Atlantic Canada (NS, NB, PEI, NL) has become one of the most active recruiting regions, with targeted programs for internationally trained nurses plus the employer-driven Atlantic Immigration Program. Ontario has implemented as-of-right registration to speed IENs into the workforce. Rural and remote communities offer the strongest incentives.
🩺 NURSE PRACTITIONERS: As of July 1, 2026, the Canadian Nurse Practitioner Licensure Exam replaced the older stream-specific exams, and NPs outside Quebec are licensed across all client ages and care settings.
🛂 THE IMMIGRATION TRACK, RUNNING IN PARALLEL:
🔹 Express Entry healthcare and social services category: September 4, 2026 draw issued 3,500 invitations at CRS 475, while general CEC sat above 520. Requires 12 months of experience in an eligible occupation within 3 years, and that experience can be from OUTSIDE Canada
🔹 Provincial nominee programs prioritise nurses; a nomination adds 600 CRS points
🔹 Atlantic Immigration Program and Rural Community Immigration Pilot use a job offer and endorsement; no CRS score
