This morning my son lied to me. I was angry, hurt, and disappointed. After I got over my initial emotional response I stopped to think about why people lie? Kids lie for attention, to brag, to cover-up, and to be polite. It is estimated that more than half of kids over 4 years old lie. This stat seemed high to me, but then I wondered about how much we, as adults, lie to ourselves? I think the percentage of adults who lie may be close to 100%.
The lies we tell ourselves are so prevalent that we may not even know it. We tell ourselves that we have to be perfect and 100% qualified before we apply for a new job or ask for a promotion, we tell ourselves our life is harder than others, we tell ourselves that we are too young/too old/too experienced/too inexperienced, and we tell ourselves if we do or say "this" people will laugh at us or think we are dumb. So many lies.
To stop lying to yourself takes a lot of work and practice. You need to focus on your emotions and what you "feel" in your body and where you feel "it" when you lie. You also need to learn to pay attention to your thoughts and be honest with yourself. Coaching can help with self deception and establishing positive habits.
