I get it.

When everything feels like it's going wrong, sometimes you just need someone to listen while you figure s**t out.

Sometimes that space isn't available for you.
Sometimes the people might not be available.
Sometimes people try and solve your problems.

Coaching starts with listening and understanding.

🔭 If you think work/life balance is a simple linear scale - you're WRONG!

If you examine the different areas of your life a bit more closely, you'll see a more complicated web of different aspects competing against each other for your precious time and attention.

⚖️ Balance depends on your:
✅ Values
✅ Priorities
✅ Needs and
✅ Wants

It's also different for everyone!
There's opportunity to integrate different aspects to maximize yourself. Take a deeper look to understand what your integrated perspective is!

Vacation Learnings 3: Adapting to Change

🚉 When we arrived to take our train back to Waterloo from Weymouth, we discovered that all the trains into Waterloo were cancelled due to a malfunctioning signal. Being on vacation, not familiar with the system, and towing our kids and luggage, it could be a very harrowing experience.

We could either:
1. Wait for an undetermined amount of time for the fix to be done and take our train ride in, or
2. Take a different train into Paddington that would require a transfer but get us there an hour or so later than our original time.

💡 We chose Option 2 and reached our next stay destination in Canary Wharf! Some minor inconveniences crossing over a train crossing footbridge and navigating the underground maze (a la Toronto train stations), kids and family got there safely.

There will always be unexpected things that pop up, either on vacation or in a project. When faced with this change:
1️⃣ Breathe. You might panic a bit, but slow yourself down a bit.
2️⃣ Consider the options. What are the different actions that could be taken and what are the trade-offs. Remember that taking no action is an option as well!
3️⃣ Take action. Follow the option.

And that's my vacation to the UK! Jolly good (do they say that?) 😁

Vacation Learnings 2: The Significance of Time

⌛ When you look at the project management triangle, is one of the critical factors that drive and constrain projects.

🕰 Upon visiting the Royal Museums Greenwich, it dawned on me how much we take our ability to measure time for granted.

So many things are so invisibly dependent on it.

❗ It's a reminder to me that we all have the choice of how we want to spend it. As a leader or PM, it's also of great importance of how do we want to use other people's time.

Use it wisely 😉

👀 Welcome to the last part (Part 3) of "Everything Everywhere All At Once" as a project success case study!

✅Storytelling:
🎞️ In being one of the most celebrated movies of 2022/2023, one of the key elements has been the team's ability to tell the story and fulfill the vision.
Try and describe the plot to a friend! It's not easy, right? Where do you even begin?
🤯 Yet when watching the movie, it's more cohesive and understandable (hopefully).

✅ Sponsors and Stakeholders
A24's approach to film production was to support their directors creative vision. Creative interference could have totally put on a totally different track?
🍿 And of course the audience. The most important stakeholder! What started off in a small release soon spread through social media and social circles like wild fire to go watch the film.

I hope that you've taken away something from the posts this week as I enjoy taking a different perspective on how project leadership can be taken from various situations.

The difference between a project manager and a project leader depends on the perspectives you take when delivering your project.

🛣️ Being able to elevate your view beyond the tactical will help you see the road ahead and how it fits into the larger picture.

☁️ At the same time, don't get caught with your head in the clouds for too long. There's work to be done.

Managing your project stakeholders can be a complex and difficult exercise. If not done properly, you could experience:
❌ Increased resistance to change
❌ Political opposition
❌ Schedule delays
❌ Budget Overruns
❌ The list goes on...

Change management is part of project management! Working with your change manager (or becoming one) is vital to proper stakeholder management.

What are your tips for stakeholder management?
