September is Save Your Photos Month! This first week will focus on Why your photo legacy matters and how to get started.

Here's tip number 4 ...

Capsule Legacy Photo Collection

Overwhelmed? Use these tips to help build a legacy capsule photo collection.

Start with a Goal – Is it to secure your photos, to pass them on, to downsize, etc.?

Sort for Clarity by dates and or categories (decades, years, holidays, vacations, etc,)
Remove the apparent duplicates, blurry or unnecessary images.

Combine the Two-Second Rule with the ABCS for a streamlined sorting approach for clarity.

Two-Second Rule – Hold an image for no more than two seconds. If there is no emotion or story, set the image aside or place it in the “C” pile.

ABCS of Sorting Photos
A - Image tells a story or feel an emotion, so archive and digitize
B - Image is important but maybe not as strong as an A photo, so place it in another pile
C - Image has no emotion, story, or may be obvious removal, so place in ‘trashcan’ category
S - Image has definite story or emotion, so archive and maybe display and share

Document the 5-Ws with a photo-safe pencil (Stabilo) – Document the Who, What, When, Where and Why in a few words so the story continues with the image for generations.

Scan and Preserve – This will create a digital copy of your photo library.

Don’t become Extinct!

Are you becoming extinct? How much do you value your photo memories?

The statement is somewhat harsh, but how many of us have boxes and bins full of priceless photo memories only to realize our next generation may not know the stories or the timeless memories they hold?

Instead, they may receive boxes of photo legacy stories only to place them in an attic, basement, or, gosh forbid, the trash.

Taking the time to organize and digitize memories, and handing them off to the next generation is seamless. It passes along the best of the best with a digital copy. It's easier to store as it takes up much less storage space, organized images, and memories are easier to find.

Organized and digitized photos are easier to display and share with family and friends. Most importantly, they are backed up as a digital copy allowing peace of mind against any unexpected disasters. It will be a collection worthy of passing to friends and family.

Begin with the end in mind…

So, you’re ready to begin getting your photos and other memorabilia organized and preserved but aren’t sure where to start. Now is the time to ask yourself a few questions and evaluate what your ultimate goals are:

- Why do you want to do this project now?

- Who are you doing this for? Do you want your collection to
be passed down in your family? Is this a legacy project or simply a personal one?

- What would you like the completed collection to consist of? Print and digital image organization? A digital-only collection? Print media converted to digital? Audio and video media transferred to new formats? Physical items to be documented and safely stored? Maybe photo books, albums, or prints?

- By when? Is there a timeline or deadline you have to get your collection organized? Do you have a plan for who will be responsible for maintaining the collection - now? In the future?

- If you could wave a magic wand and your collection was completely organized and preserved, what would you want to see?

Once you have a clear idea as to WHAT your goals are, you are ready to create a plan to get started.
