Today, September 30th, is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. In the weeks surrounding this day, we take additional time to reflect upon the devastating and ongoing impact of residential schools on Indigenous families in Canada. This day reminds each of us to acknowledge our ongoing role in reconciliation, seek education opportunities, and amplify Indigenous voices in our community.

Here are a few opportunities to become involved in Calgary this week:

🧡 Read the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action

🧡 Engage with art, music, stories, and media highlighting Indigenous perspectives

🧡 Attend an event in the city. For example, the “Speak Up!” exhibit at Studio Bell () features Indigenous artists who have used their music to share, preserve, and celebrate their culture. Admission is free between 10:00am - 5:00pm on September 30th.

This September, JB Music Therapy was proud to celebrate its 35th anniversary! As we reflect on this milestone, we are reminded of the most important part of our work - the people who make it possible.

The connection and relationships we build with our clients and in our community lie at the heart of our practice. Our community has grown over the years to include not only Calgary and the surrounding area, but a national network of music therapy initiatives. Though our team members come from diverse backgrounds, we are united in our dedication to the clients we serve.

From all of us, thank you for your ongoing support over the past three decades. It is a privilege to continually share in your music, your stories, and your lives - one note at a time. ❤️🎶

For 35 years, one Calgary company has been harnessing the power of music to create meaningful change. 🎶

For Jennifer Buchanan and the team at JB Music Therapy, music is a tool for connection and emotional well-being. Now, they’re finding new ways to make that work more accessible through Wellplayed.

Just one example of what’s possible in the Blue Sky City. 💙

P!NK was recently honoured with the prestigious O2 Silver Clef Award from Nordoff and Robbins, the UK’s largest music therapy charity, in recognition of her musical influence and advocacy.

Her acceptance speech was stunning. “Music does not need perfect words to heal someone. It just needs honesty, a sick beat... and someone in a room with you to listen.”

It can sometimes be difficult to explain that music therapy is not about making perfect music. Often, it is within the imperfect music we create with clients that honest feelings are expressed, connection becomes possible, and a new direction begins to emerge.

P!NK also spoke about leading with vulnerability: “Every lyric that I write is my heart crying, raging, hoping, screaming, pleading... I have decided to make vulnerability my life’s work.”

For those of us who write songs with clients, these words beautifully capture what we so often witness: people finding a way to express what may have been difficult - or impossible - to say in any other way.

She also drew an understanding between her stadium tours and the intimate work of music therapists:

“I get to do a glamorous and sometimes ridiculous version of that every night on tour, and you all do a very real version every day for people who really need it.”

What a meaningful acknowledgement of Nordoff and Robbins and the music therapists doing this work every day.

Here in Canada, we are so deeply grateful for the charities and organizations helping more people access music therapy - including Music Heals Canada, National Music Centre's Music Therapy Initiative and the Canadian Music Therapy Fund

Thank you, P!nk, for recognizing music therapy - and congratulations on YOUR very deserved recognition. You are amazing!

We are just so grateful to be a part of this initiative - and none of it would be possible without so many incredible partners, champions and donors.

The healing power of music is about to reach even more Canadians who need it. 🎵💙

National Music Centre (NMC) is thrilled to announce a transformative $500,000 multi-year commitment from BMO to expand NMC’s Music Therapy Initiative, bringing music therapy to more patients, families, and communities across Canada.

The initiative is delivered in hospitals and care settings through a partnership with JB Music Therapy. Already making an impact in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and British Columbia, BMO’s support will help make NMC’s Music Therapy Initiative a truly national program.

Thanks to a partnership with The Jim Pattison Foundation, BMO’s contribution will be matched dollar-for-dollar, significantly amplifying the initiative’s reach and impact.
