Keep Tabs on Your BASICs Status and CSA Score
Stay in the know about your BASICs (Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories) status and CSA (Compliance, Safety, Accountability) score to ensure your company is on top of its game.
The FMCSA’s Safety Measurement System (SMS) evaluates motor carriers based on roadside inspections and past violations, culminating in the CSA score. This score reflects your company's adherence to safety regulations and helps gauge its performance against peers with similar safety event counts, which encompass incidents like crashes, inspections, and violations.
There are seven BASICs categories, each shedding light on different facets of safety:
1. Unsafe Driving: Watch out for behaviors like speeding, reckless driving, distracted driving, failure to wear seatbelts, and improper lane changes.
2. Crash Indicator: While this data isn't public, maintaining a clean record here is crucial for your overall safety profile.
3. Hours-of-Service Compliance: Ensure your compliance with HOS regulations to avoid issues like incomplete or inaccurate logbooks.
4. Vehicle Maintenance: Stay on top of maintenance to address issues like faulty brakes, malfunctioning lights, and other defects promptly.
5. Controlled Substances/Alcohol: Maintain a zero-tolerance policy for the use and possession of alcohol or controlled substances to safeguard against penalties.
6. Hazardous Materials Compliance: Ensure proper handling of hazardous materials to avoid incidents related to leaking containers or incorrect placards and packaging.
7. Driver Fitness: Ensure all drivers are medically fit and possess valid licenses to operate commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) safely.
By actively monitoring and addressing your BASICs status, you not only enhance your company's safety but also bolster its reputation within the industry. Stay proactive, stay safe!
