TIME IS RUNNING OUT! You must act fast if you are a TFW whose Work Permit expires within a year. Suppose your workplace is located in a Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) with an unemployment rate of 6% and above; your work permit will NOT likely be renewed if your employer DOES NOT reclassify your position to a high-wage position with a minimum salary of the provincial high-wage level plus 20%. "Effective November 8, candidates applying through the high-wage stream of the TFWP will need to earn hourly salaries at least 20% higher than the median wage for their position relative to where they work to be eligible." For example, in Alberta, the high wage rate is $29.50. To qualify for the high-wage position, an extra 20% will have to be added, equivalent to $5.90, making it a total of $35.40 per hour. Many employers will need more money to afford this rate, especially in the fast food business. I already lost one big account because of this. If you are in this situation, you can hunt early. CMAs (cities) with less than 6% unemployment rate are HALIFAX, NS, MONCTON, NB, SAINT JOHN, NB, SAGUENAY, BELLEVILLE, ON, PETERBOROUGH, ON, GUELPH, ON, BARRIE, ON, GREATER SUDBURY, ON, THUNDER BAY, ON, SASKATOON, SK, LETHBRIDGE, AB, KELOWNA, BC, AND VICTORIA, BC.
