A few weeks ago, we were fortunate enough to work alongside Mark Anthony Wine and Spirits to host an evening in celebration of Ornellaia at Barberian's Steakhouse in Toronto. With very special guests, Winemaker and CEO, Marco Balsimelli and Director of North America, Alessandro Lunardi, our guests were the first to taste the new 2023 release of Ornellaia "La Vitalita", an exceptional vintage and the inaugural for Balsimelli.

Ornellaia also served Ornellaia Bianco 2023, along with Ornellaia 2015 and 2012 directly from the estate, while Iron Gate supplied the Ornellaia Bianco 2015 for comparison, along with a vertical of 2004, 2005, and 2006 Ornellaia.

Each guest generously brought a bottle to share from their cellar. With their contributions, the table experienced vintages as far back as 1998, spanning four different generations of Ornellaia. We'd like to thank all our guests, the team at Mark Anthony, and Ornellaia for making it an evening to remember.

The Rémy Martin Louis XIII Grande Champagne Cognac Jeroboam (3L) is an extraordinary presentation of one of the world’s most revered cognacs. Crafted exclusively from Grande Champagne eaux-de-vie and aged over decades in ancient French oak casks, this exceptional spirit reflects generations of Cellar Master expertise dating back to 1874.

Presented in a magnificent, hand-crafted crystal decanter inspired by a 16th-century flask discovered at the Battle of Jarnac, the Jeroboam arrives in an opulent wooden trunk complete with crystal glassware. On the palate, Louis XIII reveals remarkable layers of dried rose, honey, figs, leather, cigar box, plum and exotic spice, unfolding with extraordinary depth and an enduring finish.

A great find, the grapes are grown in a small parcel of the legendary Oakville estate near the banks of the Napa River. Because nearly the entire tiny production is snapped up by the private mailing list, seeing a bottle at auction is a genuine event.

The grapes were pressed directly to French oak (5% new) and aged on their gross lees, a technique that lends the wine a stunning, rich texture without sacrificing its vibrant energy. It balances a crisp, crystalline acidity with a deeply layered mouthfeel. On the nose, you’ll find an elegant mix of white peach, crushed flint, and citrus blossoms, leading into a finish that lingers. A bona fide unicorn! A rare survivor from a formative era of The Macallan, this 1973 vintage is a centerpiece of the legendary Handwritten Label series. Distilled in 1973 and bottled in 1983, this exclusive expression was crafted to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Opimian Society.

As part of the famed Handwritten Label series—distinguished by its individually inscribed label, signature wax seal, and exceptionally limited outturn—this particular bottling is widely considered the rarest of the group. Having been distributed exclusively to society members, it is a seldom-seen treasure on the secondary market.

Expect an enriching, contemplative experience. The palate reveals classic hallmarks of a bygone era of patient distillation: rich layers of dried fruit, Oloroso sherry, antique wood, and dark chocolate. It leads to a long, elegant finish defined by lingering spice and polished oak.
