We're heartbroken to share that we've lost an extraordinary woman.

Ila Edgar lived life with her whole heart. If you were part of her world, through her work, Hello Love, or a conversation that changed something in you, you know she was a force. The kind that made you feel seen, valued, exactly as you are. She always left you feeling more human, more yourself, more loved.

Ila built her life's work around a revolutionary idea: we all deserve love, starting with love for ourselves. She invited people to stop performing "fine" and start feeling fully alive. She taught us that being messily human isn't something to fix, it's something to celebrate.

She was vibrant. She wore sparkly shoes and heart-shaped sunglasses. She showed up with an authenticity that was both disarming and magnetic. She made ordinary moments spectacular simply by being present.

Ila spread love like confetti; the real kind that says, "you belong here, all of you." Even in her hardest moments, she chose aliveness over numbness, connection over isolation, love over fear.

Though she's gone far too soon, the love she gave and the ripples she started will continue to spread.

In honour of Ila: spread some love today. Write a love letter (find her downloadable templates in her bio). Tell someone they matter. See someone fully. That's how we keep her spirit alive. 💗

🗨️Share a memory or the way Ila touched your life in the comments. Let's fill this space with love.

I strive every single day to be authentic to myself and to the people I spend time with - my friends, my family, my team, my clients, the wonderful people in my audiences.

Reading this feedback from a recent session where we openly and vulnerably talked about how our behaviours build and break trust, whether we intend them to or not, and how to have better, trust-building conversations, absolutely fills my heart.

I bring my whole, real self to all of my team coaching and speaking engagements and am intentionally “heart centered.”

Whether you realize it or not, you are constantly modeling behaviours and reinforcing cultural norms inside your team … good or bad.

The question is: Do the norms you’re modeling and reinforcing cultivate psychological safety or not?

Do you REWARD or PUNISH employees who debate and offer unique perspectives?

If you want a culture of engagement, commitment, and excellence, this is an important topic to unravel. Only when people feel safe to question, challenge, and offer unique (even opposing) opinions, will you have a team reaching its full potential.

I’ll be speaking on the topic of Psychological Safety at SAIT’s Learn to Love Leadership Conference on June 27.

If you’ve never been to one of my classes or events, you’ll be happy to know that I’m not a typical “speaker.” I’ll have you rolling up your sleeves, doing great work on yourself, and learning to take what you discover back to your team. 30-day plan included!

Inspired by the book, ‘Humor, Seriously,’ by Naomi Bagdonas and Jennifer Aaker, Charles & I have a blast discussing how humour (or ‘humor,’ to honour …or honor… Charles and our US listeners!) can not only provide levity and soften tension, it can “quicken the path to candor and vulnerability.” All of those things are powerful trust builders, so we love this topic, and have many laughs discussing how to use humor to build trust.

Bringing lightness and levity to our relationships allows us to show up as our authentic human selves - something that is incredibly important to living a full, honest, and enjoyable life.

A 2019 HBR survey* found that 58% of employees trust a complete stranger more than their own boss.
Excuse me?

Wanna hear something even more alarming?

45% of them cited their LACK OF TRUST IN LEADERSHIP as the single biggest issue impacting their PERFORMANCE at work.

Well that’s not good. It’s not good at all.

I’m guessing this isn’t actually breaking news to you, since 55% of CEOs believe that this crisis in confidence is a threat to their organization’s growth.

So it’s kind of a big deal.

And if this is equation true:

LACK OF TRUST = LACK OF MOTIVATION & PRODUCTIVITY

Then isn’t the inverse equation also true?

TRUST = MOTIVATION & PRODUCTIVITY

I work with TEAMS and ORGANIZATIONS to build trust and become more trustworthy (sometimes we unknowingly and unintentionally damage trust with the things we do). I can help you create Equation #2.

If your team is struggling and you’re not sure why - or if you know exactly why and want some help to get unstuck - I’d love to talk with you.

I was thrilled to be a part of a client’s special event last week. Any time someone puts their trust in me to create and deliver something with true meaning and impact, my cup overflows. This session was custom made for this group, had lots of opportunities for interaction, and I got out of it as much as they did.

If you are looking to shake things up a bit in your organization, I’d love to talk about what we could do together.

This week’s episode of Trust on Purpose was an emotional one for me. It can be painful and hurtful when we hide and ignore uncomfortable emotions, even when the sadness is hidden with a false smile.

When we don’t have the courage to sit with someone who is struggling; when we show care for them only when things are going well, what does that say about the relationship? I can tell you that, for the other person, it feels terrible, because we’re not seeing them for the entire, real human they are.

So let’s stop doing that to each other.

Learn to sit in discomfort with someone.

Can you be 1% more open to another person’s emotions?

Can you show care even when things are difficult?

Try it.

Do you ever doubt yourself? Do the voices in your head whisper (or perhaps scream) that you're not good enough, smart enough, tall enough, successful enough?

What if I told you, you could turn the volume down, understand what they're saying, and make sense of it?

Self doubt haunts many of us, but it doesn't have to. I’m not talking about faking it until you make it, I’m talking about learning and practicing grounded, objective, nurturing, and supportive behaviours that build SELF-TRUST, confidence, and authenticity in yourself.

Come learn how!

My online classes are live, fun, only 50 minutes, and are a “taster” of what it’s like to work with me. So come check it out and if you think my approach might be a good fit for your work team, we’ll talk.

Did I mention it’s FREE?

Our society rewards and reinforces positivity, almost at any cost. We label certain emotions as “bad” or “negative,” and we are taught to ignore, put on a smile, and push those emotions down so that we don’t make anyone else uncomfortable. False positivity has become toxic in our workplaces and homes, and has damaging effects on trust in our most important relationships.

We dig deep in this episode and encourage us to see each other for the real humans we are.

Do you love being a leader?
Hello? Anyone?
Are those crickets I hear?

Let’s be real. A lot of us start out in our careers thinking that a leadership role is the only role to aspire to. Quickly after being promoted to our first leadership position, we think “What the actual $%^&?” The role isn’t what we had imagined (feet up on the desk, coffee always hot, doling out brilliance to our employees). We quickly come to realize it’s full of frustration, difficult situations, and constantly trying to get your team to row in the same direction.

LEADERSHIP IS HARD.

If you’ve fallen out of love with leadership, SAIT has created this conference for you! The Learn to Love Leadership conference is an in-person event (yay!) on June 27 and I’m going to be speaking at it!

I love talking about psychological safety because I know how important it is for a productive and enjoyable work environment (really, any environment).

This is a chance to pause from your every-day and reflect on the relationships in your lives. Do you work in a psychologically safe environment? What does that even mean? What does it feel like? How can you help create it if your workplace isn’t safe?

Come find out at SAIT’s Learn to Love Leadership conference: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/saitcorporatetraining_an-interactive-day-of-learning-exercises-activity-7061820670376103936-KTOp?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop

Trust is incredibly important to me. I feel either the existence or absence of it in every relationship I have. When I look at the tough things that I bump up against, they always have to do with trust - sometimes it’s non-existent and sometimes it’s been damaged, or even broken.

Without reflecting on what’s going on at the heart of the issue, I can’t simply hope the relationship will mend. I have to figure out what has impacted the trust, ask myself some tough questions, have some tough conversations, and make some tough decisions. And every single time I do this, I’m thankful that I did. My life is all the more rich for it!

I’m happy to be featured in Trust Across America’s inaugural “The Global Who’s Who in Trust, Ethics, and Leadership” magazine.
