Every September 30, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation / Orange Shirt Day, we honour Residential School Survivors, remember those who never came home, and acknowledge the lasting impacts that residential schools continue to have on Indigenous Peoples, families, and communities.

This day is an opportunity to reflect, learn, listen, and act. Reconciliation is not a single moment or event. It is a journey of ongoing commitment to building understanding, strengthening relationships, and taking meaningful action that supports Indigenous communities and voices.

We encourage everyone to wear orange, take time to learn, reflect on our shared responsibilities, and support Indigenous voices today and every day.

Yesterday, a team from our Calgary office spent the afternoon volunteering with the City of Calgary, planting more than 150 trees! Tree-planting initiatives like this help grow Calgary’s urban tree canopy and contribute to a greener city. The weather cooperated, the team got their hands dirty, and it turned out to be a great afternoon!

While on a project this August, our team had the opportunity to explore Saskatchewan's Great Sandhills, one of Canada's most unique landscapes. With native grasslands, wetlands, and lots of sand, the landscape feels more like a desert than the Canadian Prairies. As one of the largest active sand dune complexes in Canada, this remarkable ecosystem is home to specialized plants and wildlife which have adapted to its unique conditions. A remarkable reminder that Saskatchewan's landscapes are full of surprises.

Welcome to the first in our Employee Spotlight Series! Meet our Principal, Business Continuity and Technology Resilience, Barry Moore. His career began in Biochemistry and evolved through roles at IBM Canada and WestJet Airlines, giving him a wealth of experience helping organizations become more effective, secure, and resilient. Today, at Trace Associates Inc. (Trace), he works closely with clients to identify critical risks, strengthen business continuity strategies, and ensure organizations can recover quickly when incidents occur. This year has been packed with exciting initiatives for him, including major projects (a Business Impact Analysis [BIA], Recovery Strategies, and a Business Continuity Plan for a large energy infrastructure and transition business; an Executive Tabletop Exercise for a national retail organization; an IT Disaster Recovery Plan for a financial services and insurance company; an Enterprise Risk Assessment and BIA is for a municipal government in British Columbia; and more!) as well as keynote presentations in Calgary and Edmonton of his talk “From Crisis to Confidence: Strategies for Leading under Pressure,” in which he offers five obvious and five less-obvious strategies for effective leadership during a major business disruption. At the same time, Barry has been busy preparing for the March 2027 Disaster Forum conference in Kananaskis, presented by Trace, where he plays an integral role.

Outside of work, you'll find Barry embracing the outdoors through hiking, fishing, skiing, golfing, the occasional hockey game, and breeding springer spaniels. A lifelong learner and self-proclaimed tinkerer, he enjoys taking things apart and putting them back together (with varying levels of success)! He also has a love of classic literature, music from the '70s and '80s, and cheering on the Calgary Flames, despite the occasional heartbreak.

A few fun facts about Barry:

Dream career as a kid? Professional hockey player (with a brief aspiration to be an Ewok or ninja).
Favorite book? The Old Man and the Sea, by Ernest Hemingway.
Favorite movie? The Godfather.
Dream place to live? The south of France, near Marseilles.
Ultimate scientific breakthrough? Endless clean energy through cold fusion.
We're grateful to have Barry's expertise, leadership, and smiling face around our Calgary office, including the way he boosts morale by bringing in the occasional furry visitor.

If you’d like to find out more about what Barry does at Trace, he is always happy to chat – reach out to him at [email protected] or connect via LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rbarrymoore

This Sunday, June 21, marks National Indigenous Peoples Day

“National Indigenous Peoples Day represents a moment to reflect on the resilience of Indigenous communities, while acknowledging the histories and realities that shape our shared future. Above all, the day is a reminder that reconciliation is an ongoing commitment. It calls on us to lead with integrity, humility, and purpose, and to ensure that our decisions contribute to a more inclusive, respectful, and prosperous future for Indigenous Peoples.”

- Brad Spence, Principal, Indigenous Advisory

In the days leading up to National Indigenous Peoples Day, communities across Canada are hosting events that honour the rich cultures, histories, and traditions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. Meaningful awareness begins with intentional learning and reflection, both within our organization and in our everyday lives. We encourage you to join us in our pledge as we continue to learn, educate, and support.
