Reservoir Rundown: New Brunswick's Untapped Shale Gas

Between Moncton and St. John, The Frederick Brook Shale—a deep, gas-rich formation beneath the McCully Field in southern New Brunswick, holds 67–80 Tcf of natural gas in place (~23 Tcf recoverable), making it one of the largest untapped resources in Canada.

In the mid-2000s, Apache Canada partnered with Corridor Resources (now , HWX) to drill some wells with promising results. Despite early signs of success, the project stalled due to public pushback and an eventual moratorium on fracking in 2014.

Today, Headwater produces gas from November to April and captures premium pricing, selling to the NE U.S. market. However, the province-wide moratorium on hydraulic fracturing has kept the deeper Frederick Brook Shale off-limits for over a decade.

Is it time to revisit the conversation around unlocking this domestic energy opportunity?

Multilateral horizontal wells have been trending in Alberta since the 2010s, offering flexible and complex directional designs. These designs allow geologists to gather insights from one lateral leg and apply them to the next, improving efficiency and performance with each well. Here, we feature the waffle, the feather, the fishbone, and what we may call the "360" design on a macro scale.

Why multi-leg horizontals?

✅ Increased reservoir contact
✅ Increased drainage efficiency
✅ Reduced surface footprint
✅ Access to thin or tight reservoir intervals
✅ Lower overall cost!

Loading land boundary projection polygons into StarSteer's map view is critical for keeping complex wellbores within the planned drainage box.

Are the Horn River & Liard Basins Due for a Comeback?

These two northern basins hold some of the richest dry gas resources in North America—yet they’ve been sitting on the sidelines. Let's take a look at North America's biggest gas plays in terms of OGIP:

1️⃣ Marcellus Shale: Estimates range from 1,500 Tcf.
2️⃣ Horn River Basin: Approximately 448 Tcf.
3️⃣ Liard Basin: Over 210 Tcf.
4️⃣ Haynesville Shale: Approximately 195 Tcf.
5️⃣ Barnett Shale: Approximately 75 Tcf proven reserves.

💡 It's obvious the Horne River and Liard Basins have huge potential, so why aren't we talking about them more?

🚧 Remote locations and infrastructure bottlenecks have made large-scale development tough.
📈 But with global LNG demand surging, stranded gas is looking a lot more valuable.

What do you think—are Horn River and Liard still too far out, or could they be Canada’s next big gas plays? Certainly, AECO's low price is a major roadblock for new development.

Reservoir Rundown: Vaca Mu**ta, South America’s Shale Powerhouse

Everyone talks about the Montney, Duvernay, and Permian around here, but Argentina’s Vaca Mu**ta Formation is proving it belongs in the same conversation. It’s Argentina’s top-producing formation and one of the most promising shale basins in the world.

🔹 Huge Resource Potential – Estimated 16 billion barrels of recoverable oil and 308 TCF of gas (source: US Energy Information Administration)
🔹 Montney-Like Overpressure – Thick, high-quality rock with strong production rates.
🔹 Duvernay-Style Liquids – Rich in condensates and light oil, making it attractive even in volatile markets.
🔹 Scaling Up Development – Operators are applying North American-style horizontal drilling and completions, but there’s still room for growth.

Argentina ranks 4th in the world for technically recoverable shale oil reserves (behind Russia, USA, and China), while Canada sits 10th.

The challenge? Infrastructure and export capacity. Production is growing fast, but midstream development needs to keep pace to fully unlock its potential.

Have you worked in Vaca Mu**ta? Let us know!

Precision Geosteering in Action 🚀🔍

Belloy geologists use StarSteer to precisely navigate a 1.5m-thick porosity zone, maximizing reservoir contact. With live-streamed WITSML data, our geosteering geologists can quickly adapt to changes in gamma ray, gas, and rate of pe*******on, ensuring we stay out of the roof and in the sweet spot.

This well was part of an impressive 6-leg, 17,000m multi-lateral drilled in a Northern Alberta conventional reservoir.

With StarSteer, we can visualize the pseudo gas curve along the lateral, providing real-time insights to optimize well placement. (Vertical Exaggeration = 40x)

This Iron-Nickel meteorite known as "Seymchan" is a fantastic display of a Widmanstatten pattern, only found in extraterrestrial meteorites. Long phases of iron-nickel minerals (taenite and kamacite) are formed during a period of extremely slow cooling (think ~100 to ~1000 degrees C over 1,000,000 years), with total cooling times of 10 million years or less.

These meteorites are sliced, polished, cleaned, and etched with a nitric acid solution to best show the unique Widmanstatten pattern.

Grande Cache Dinosaur Tracksite

Located in the former Smoky River Coal Mine, approximately 20 km north of Grande Cache, the Grande Cache Dinosaur Tracksite is the only large-scale exposure of dinosaur tracks known in Canada.

The footprints occur as natural moulds (i.e. they are impressions as opposed to infillings or natural casts) and many lengthy trackways (sequences of footprints made by individual animals) are present. The footprints of bipedal animals are dominant over those of the quadrapeds.

The Grande Cache dinosaur tracks were made by several species of dinosaurs, including several types of theropods (meat-eating dinosaurs), ankylosaurs (armoured dinosaurs) and several species of birds. Estimates suggest that there are well over 10,000 footprints!

Red Rock Coulee
Located south of Medicine Hat, Alberta, this unique site features massive, spherical red boulders scattered across a rolling landscape. These boulders are concretions, formed when minerals precipitated around a core in sedimentary rock, and are among the largest of their kind in the world.

The Wadi al Hitan (the Valley of the Whales) was designated a world heritage site in 2005 for its hundreds of fossils of some of the earliest forms of whales (~40Ma), a period where this part of Africa was covered in a large, shallow sea. It is the largest whale graveyard on the planet covering 200 square kilometers.

The whales possess small hind limbs and have a powerful skull with similar teeth to those of carnivorous land mammals. This important site is an important key to proving that whales transitioned from an amphibious walking whale to the modern day whales in our oceans today.
