How do you turn complex utility data and building-performance issues into a clear energy action plan?

An Level II Energy Audit for a Visitor Centre in Ontario demonstrated the power of in identifying operational inefficiencies, evaluating upgrades, and delivering measurable results.

results from the RETScreen analysis:
• 108,762 kWh/year total fuel savings
• 80,830 kWh/year heating savings
• 28,775 kWh/year electricity savings
• 54.8% reduction in GHG emissions
• Nearly $20,000/year in fuel cost savings
• Simple payback of only 1.3 years
• 97.65% regression confidence using weather-normalized utility analysis

RETScreen helped isolate the impact of:
✔ Heat pump repairs
✔ Ventilation upgrades
✔ LED lighting retrofits
✔ Thermostat scheduling
✔ Motion and daylight sensors
✔ Building envelope improvements

One of the biggest insights is that sometimes repairing failed equipment and optimizing controls can deliver just as much value as major capital upgrades.

At VT Group, we use advanced tools like RETScreen to transform building data into practical, cost-effective energy solutions.

How do you identify meaningful energy savings in a brewery where process loads operate year-round?

A recent project in Lacombe, Alberta used software to a brewery’s energy performance and uncover operational and capital upgrade opportunities.

The RETScreen analysis helped:
✔ utility consumption against the energy model
✔ process heat, refrigeration, lighting, and HVAC loads
✔ savings and paybacks for individual ECMs
✔ both operational improvements and long-term capital planning

results included:
• 71,135 kWh/year in total modelled savings
• 12,062 kWh/year in electricity savings
• 46,236 kWh/year in heating savings
• Improved understanding of process heat demands and operational efficiency opportunities

The project how RETScreen can support not only energy audits, but broader energy management strategies by connecting technical analysis with financial decision-making.

This is an excellent example of how data-driven energy modelling can help industrial facilities better understand their operations and prioritize upgrades.

Using Expert, VT Group completed an energy audit for a automotive dealership facility in Medicine Hat. RETScreen was used to compare the building’s existing performance against proposed upgrades, helping identify practical energy-saving opportunities with measurable financial results.

Results:
✔ 139,164 kWh/year total energy savings
✔ 281,006 kWh/year fuel savings
✔ 17.8% fuel reduction
✔ 18.3% GHG reduction
✔ Approx. $9,425 annual fuel cost savings

The audit identified several high-impact energy conservation measures, including:
• LED lighting retrofits
• Motion & daylight controls
• Programmable thermostats
• High-efficiency heating equipment
• Ventilation improvements aligned with ASHRAE standards

One of the key insights from the RETScreen analysis was that heating represented the facility’s primary weather-sensitive energy load, while lighting and controls offered strong opportunities for electricity savings.

At VT Group, we use RETScreen as part of our ASHRAE energy audits to help clients make informed, data-driven decisions that improve building performance, reduce operating costs, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

BC Hydro, in collaboration with the Government of B.C., launched the Residential Building Retrofit Program in September 2024.
It offers significant financial support to upgrade building systems—from heat pumps and lighting to windows, solar, EV charging infrastructure, and more.

Program Highlights:
✅ Assessment – Up to $5,000 to evaluate energy-saving retrofit possibilities
✅ Study – Up to $30,000 for an in-depth analysis of building systems
✅ for Equipment Upgrades – Applicable to heat pumps, windows, lighting, water heating, and more
✅ & EV Infrastructure – Rebates for solar panels, batteries, and EV charger installations.

These upgrades not only help you reduce energy bills, enhance tenant comfort, and future?proof your building, but they also increase property value and resilience to extreme weather.

We’ve helped numerous properties in B.C. navigate the program—maximizing rebate potential while minimizing hassle.

Let’s explore what your building qualifies for.
Schedule a 20-30 minutes information session and we would be happy to walk you through the details.

Big results start with the right tools.

Using , this office retrofit in Lindsay, Ontario delivered:
• 64.9% energy reduction
• 76.2% fuel reduction
• 297,044 kWh saved annually
• 90% GHG reduction
• $21K+ annual savings

What drove the impact?
Smarter envelope design, high-efficiency heat pumps, energy recovery ventilation, LED lighting, and solar PV — all modeled together to show the full picture.

This is what happens when data meets good design.
RETScreen makes it simple to turn building data into clear, actionable decisions.

Big from smart energy modelling—and the right team behind it.
We recently completed a case study on a community centre in Edmonton where we used to compare a code-based baseline against a full redevelopment design.

The speak for themselves:
• 35% overall energy reduction
• 47.4% fuel reduction
• 56% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
• 53,382 kWh/year energy savings
• 30.4 tonnes of CO₂ avoided annually

By combining envelope upgrades, improved ventilation, higher-efficiency mechanical systems, lighting controls, and a 56 kW solar PV system, the project demonstrates how integrated design delivers real performance improvements.

At , we help clients achieve these outcomes by:
• detailed energy modeling and scenario analysis
• cost-effective upgrades and ECMs
• retrofit and redevelopment decision-making
• projects with NECB, ASHRAE, and sustainability targets
• energy, cost, and carbon savings before construction

If you're planning upgrades or redevelopment, we can help you move from assumptions to clear, data-driven decisions.

Project Kickoff: Eby Place, Terrace BC

We’re excited to a new project in Terrace, British Columbia.

Eby Place is a 5-storey mixed-use residential development designed as a Health Services and Seniors Housing complex. This project represents a significant step forward in building standards in Northern BC.

VT Group of Companies (Acacia, VerdaTech and Qualistat) has been engaged to complete the final air tightness testing to meet BC Housing and Provincial Energy STEP Code requirements.

The project :
Envelope Air Leakage Rate (EALR): 2.0 L/s/m² @ 75 Pa
Interior Partitions Air Leakage Rate (IPALR): 1.2 L/s/m² @ 50 Pa

Testing will be conducted in accordance with ASTM E779 and USACE standards, ensuring accuracy and compliance at every stage.

To support this, six blower door systems have been prepared and shipped from our Calgary office, marking the beginning of this multi-stage testing process.

Stay tuned as we take you behind the scenes of large building air tightness testing.
