I created this image with some very talented local artists. I participated in a creative shoot with my hair stylist, Stephanie Hopkins and a local makeup artist, Heather Baird. It was a blast working with these ladies! I have another creative shoot coming up soon with Stephanie and I am SO excited!
Black & White photography is truly one of my favourite things. Color photography is amazing, and there are lots of brilliant uses for it but it's hard to beat a truly well done B&W photograph. I just think B&W photography takes a different kind of intention. There needs to be contrast and/or emotion in the original image to make it stand out. I feel like it pulls your attention to the subject and you become focused on who they are or how you feel about the photograph. One of my FAVOURITE photo series' is called "In the American West' by Richard Avedon. He photographed a whole series of incredibly impactful photographs on a white backdrop throughout the western US states with his subjects being everyday people. A significant part of my respect for this series is that I know it was shot on large format film. I had a glimpse of what this entails during my first year of photography school. We had to photograph all our assignments on 4x5 film for a few months. For those of you unfamiliar with the process, it requires about 50(+) pounds of equipment, a cape, upside down viewfinder image, sheets of film, a light meter, film holder, probably a polaroid camera for test shots, AND then you hope you loaded the film right and the film slide cooperates and don't malfunction and wreck your photo. Which, by the way, you don't always know it's wrecked until you get back to the studio, after spending hours developing the film, letting it dry and viewing it on an enlarger. Experienced photographers could probably eliminate some of this but it is all still relevant. So, YAY digital photography! It's amazing to have photography so accessible to us now, because it allows us to take photos of things we may not have been able to in the past!
