Osteoarthritis (OA) was previously considered non-inflammatory. It is now well recognized that inflammatory mediators are produced and can be measured in joint fluids of patients with OA. This inflammation is a major risk factor in cartilage loss, pain, swelling, and stiffness. When management and treatment of OA consists of anti-inflammatory components, patients can improve their function and decrease pain levels.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a cell therapy, that uses one’s own blood through joint injections, to reduce inflammation. Platelets are a high source of concentrated growth factors and inflammatory mediators. Platelets in PRP release many types of anti-inflammatory proteins that signal cells that lead to suppression of inflammation in OA.

PRP is currently understood to have anti-inflammatory and pain reduction effects that can help with more than just knee issues. PRP injections are used to treat torn tendons, tendinitis, muscle injuries, arthritis-related pain, and joint injuries.

There are a myriad of ways in which PRP can help joint osteoarthritis, including the anabolic effects of the growth factors found within PRP. There is a well-documented anti-inflammatory effect as well as cell proliferation and scaffolding to help create tissue remodeling. PRP has also been found to improve tissue stiffness, making cartilage more resilient to future wear and tear.

Most traditional cortisones are chondrotoxic, but different options do exist and are readily available.

A particular type of triamcinolone, for example, has been shown to be significantly more chondroprotective. This is important as it means you can reap the benefits of decreased inflammation and reduced pain without paying the price of accelerated tissue degeneration.

We will walk you through all the treatment options available and find the one that's best for you. Call us at 403-879-8919 to get started.

Chiropractors are doctors regulated by the Health Professions Act and recognized as primary health care practitioners with a duty to assess, diagnose and treat a myriad of musculoskeletal conditions. We like to refer to chiropractors as doctors who focus on nerve, muscle and joint issues, and the inter-relationship between those tissues.

When running, symmetry is everything. Even holding your phone, rather than having it strapped to your arm, will alter your gait. These micro-changes, when multiplied by the number of strides that you take, can create significant imbalances over time.

Pocket your phone, or strap it to your arm. OR: don't bring it at all. Focus on your breathing and your symmetrical strides, and enjoy the view.

In a world where Ironmans, ultra-marathons and death races are popular, it is easy to think that these incredible athletes are doing things right and with no detriment to them. Nothing could be further from the truth, however.

The degree of muscle damage that a runner incurs is directly proportional to the distance run. There is no adaptation to the distance at a cellular level; muscle breaks down at the same rate regardless of how fit we are. Interestingly, and for reasons not fully understood, men have higher markers of muscle damage than women do for a matched distance.

We begin to see increased calcium accumulation in muscle after approximately 20 kilometers of running due to muscular cell wall damage. Muscle damage continues and the body begins to display symptoms of exercise induced muscle damage.

Wondering what will happen during your injection appointment?

The practitioner will go over your consent form, explain the procedure and answer any questions you may have. We will take 60 millilitres of blood from your arm to prepare the PRP.

The sample is placed in a centrifuge and spun to separate the platelets from the rest of the blood components: This process may take several minutes.

The practitioner will bring you into the treatment room and position you on the table where the skin will be cleaned. Using ultrasound guidance, the practitioner will then inject the platelet-rich blood into the affected area using a sterile needle.
