🌺🌍✨ June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada! 🇨🇦 It's an incredible opportunity to celebrate and learn about the unique cultures, traditions, and experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. Let's take this time to honor the stories, achievements, and resilience of Indigenous communities who have shaped this land since time immemorial.

🗓️ Originally designated as National Aboriginal History Month in 2009, the name was changed to National Indigenous History Month in 2017, reflecting the diverse and rich heritage of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

💚 This month, we'll be exploring various themes that highlight different aspects of Indigenous history, cultures, and perspectives. From women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ individuals to the environment, traditional knowledge, and reconciliation, each week offers an opportunity to delve deeper into these important topics.

🌟 Here's how you can get involved and show your support:

1️⃣ Discover stories, traditions, and cultures: Immerse yourself in Indigenous storytelling through books, shows, movies, and music by Indigenous artists. Follow the GC Indigenous Instagram account for inspiring stories from Indigenous women, 2SLGBTQ+ individuals, environmentalists, artists, activists, scientists, and researchers.

2️⃣ Explore the past and honor the truth: Begin your educational journey by learning about Inuit, Métis, and First Nations communities across Canada. Download the Reconciliation: A Starting Point app to gain insights into Indigenous Peoples, historical events, and reconciliation initiatives. Visit the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation Commission to understand the legacy of residential schools and the path to healing.

3️⃣ Learn more about present-day communities: Discover the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities around you and the traditional lands you reside on through Indigenous Peoples and lands maps. Explore the significance of land acknowledgment and how you can incorporate this practice into your life. Statistics Canada provides valuable data on various subjects related to Indigenous peoples.

4️⃣ Show your support: Join the conversation on social media using the hashtag to share stories, historic figures, leaders, and cultural expressions that resonate with you. Let's amplify Indigenous voices and celebrate their contributions to our shared heritage!

🌸 This National Indigenous History Month, let's come together to celebrate the vibrant tapestry of Indigenous cultures and recognize the invaluable contributions of Indigenous communities throughout Canada's history and future. Together, we can foster understanding, respect, and reconciliation.
