Committed to developing places, spaces and programs that are open and accessible for all, we have partnered with CNIB Access Labs to pilot BlindSquare on St. Patrick’s Island — a self-voicing GPS app designed to support people who are blind, deafblind or partially sighted.

The pilot will enhance accessibility and wayfinding across the 31-acre island, supporting more inclusive access to one of East Village’s most celebrated public spaces.

As we recognize National AccessAbility Week, this pilot reflects our ongoing commitment to creating places and experiences that are welcoming, inclusive and accessible.

Alongside our project partners at Werklund Centre and funding partners at City of Calgary – Your Local Government, the YourAlberta (Government of Alberta) and Dave Werklund & Family, we are proud to celebrate the official groundbreaking of the Olympic Plaza Transformation (OPT) — a major milestone on the revitalization of one of Calgary’s most well-known public spaces.

While construction has been underway on the Werklund Centre Transformation (WCT) Expansion on the west end of the site since late 2024, today’s announcement officially marks the start of construction on the plaza itself.

The revitalized Olympic Plaza will transform the 35-year-old urban gathering place into a modern, innovative, flexible and active public space designed to better serve the evolving needs of Calgary’s downtown core. The revitalized plaza will include a new pavilion with food and beverage offerings and public washrooms along the eastern edge, expanded green space to the north, and flexible infrastructure designed to support everyday use, seasonal programming, markets, festivals, events of up to 5,000 people, and a winter skating rink.

Thoughtful design elements will honour the plaza’s Olympic legacy, including the integration of one of Calgary's 1988 Olympic cauldrons and a striking 12-metre central water feature inspired by the 'sunflake' the official emblem of the 1988 Olympic Games.

Together, the Olympic Plaza Transformation and Werklund Centre Transformation represent a generational investment in Calgary’s artistic, cultural and civic future, and a vital component of The City of Calgary's downtown revitalization strategy — driving vibrancy, economic activity and year-round cultural experiences in the heart of Calgary.

The design of this transformative project is led by GH3, CCxA, and Belleville Placemaking. To ensure construction is effectively coordinated, EllisDon Corporation and Colliers Project Leaders will serve as Construction Manager and Project Managers for both WCT expansion project and for the OPT.

The Olympic Plaza Transformation is under construction and anticipated to be completed in 2028.

After nearly two decades of city-building work in Calgary’s downtown east side, we are bringing our development expertise, masterplanning experience and community connection to a new portfolio: Transit-Oriented Communities (TOC) by CMLC.

In support of The City of Calgary’s Housing Strategy, Home is Here, this work is exploring the transformation of three City-owned sites along the Red Line LRT: Fish Creek-Lacombe, Dalhousie and Anderson.

Each site is unique, but our approach is consistent: start with community engagement, understand the local context, and develop community-informed, market-viable master plans that consider housing, public spaces, services, retail and connectivity close to transit.

Fish Creek-Lacombe and Dalhousie are currently in the Planning and Pre-Approvals stage, with active engagement underway.

Proud to see the expanded BMO Centre recognized on the global stage as a finalist in the 2026 Architizer A+Awards in the Architecture + Metal category — selected alongside five projects from around the world representing the best in architecture and design.

A catalyst project for The Culture + Entertainment District, the expansion was inspired by the landscapes of Southern Alberta and the spirit of the Calgary Stampede. Defined by its sculptural architectural form and range of copper-toned metallic finishes, the expanded BMO Centre has become an architectural landmark in Calgary since welcoming the world in June 2024 — setting a new precedent for world-class convention centres.

We are proud to have delivered this project on behalf of our partners at Calgary Stampede and the City of Calgary, alongside the prime design team of Stantec, Populous and S2.

Public voting is open until Friday, May 15. Support the project by casting your vote here: https://awards.architizer.com/a/page/vote-now

CMLC’s city‑building work was recently featured in , highlighting our role in shaping some of Calgary’s most recognized master‑planned neighbourhoods.

The article profiles East Village alongside communities like Garrison Woods and The Bridges in Bridgeland-Riverside as examples of how redevelopment within established areas can serve as a thoughtful model for city building. It explores how long‑term planning, public realm investment, and strong partnerships have helped transform East Village into a vibrant, connected inner‑city neighbourhood.

For nearly two decades, we’ve led the revitalization of East Village into a dynamic, vibrant, connected downtown neighbourhood. As steward of the East Village Master Plan, ensuring the safety, cleanliness and overall well-being of the community remains a core priority for us.

This past weekend, we were pleased to host our first East Village Safety Open House, welcoming more than400 residents, businesses and community members. The event created space for the community to connect directly with the organizations working together everyday to support East Village’s Safe, Clean and Awesome (SCA) program.

Partners in attendance included the HELP Team, The Salvation Army Central Care Team, Calgary Police Service, Calgary Drop-In Centre, Transit Public Safety and Bylaw Services, RadiCare Ventures, and Garda World—highlighting the coordinated, multi-agency approach behind this work.

We also recently marked the one-year anniversary of the East Village Safe, Clean & Awesome App—an innovative tool that enables residents, businesses and visitors to actively participate in the neighbourhood’s ongoing stewardship. In its first year, the app has generated more than 640 submissions across East Village’s 80 acres of public realm, supporting the removal of 2,703 graffiti tags and thousands of garbage cans emptied. The app continues to play an important role in helping keep East Village’s parks, plazas and public spaces well cared for and responsive to community needs.

These are just a few of the many initiatives delivered in partnership to support a safe, clean and welcoming East Village. Learn more about how we—and our partners—are stewarding the neighbourhood through the Safe, Clean and Awesome program here: https://bit.ly/47NoXYK

We’re excited to share that the Olympic Plaza Transformation (OPT) was shortlisted for The Pineapples Awards.

The Pineapples is a UK-based awards program celebrating excellence in placemaking and place-led initiatives that drive positive social, environmental, and economic impact. OPT was shortlisted in the International Future Place category—one of only six projects selected worldwide.

This category recognizes visionary proposals for places outside the UK that aren’t yet fully built, evaluating how well they foster community, welcome visitors, attract tenants, and support people living, working, connecting, and playing.

The Olympic Plaza Transformation is being delivered by Calgary Municipal Land Corporation, serving as development manager on behalf of our partners, Werklund Centre and The City of Calgary, with design led by the prime design team of gh3 Architecture, CCxA Landscape Architecture and Belleville Placemaking.
