We're proud to share that Calgary's Central Library has been named a finalist in the 2026 Architecture Today Test of Time Awards, recognized among 36 projects from around the world that continue to demonstrate excellence years after opening. Central Library is one of four projects shortlisted in the awards' International category, which celebrates outstanding architectural projects from outside the UK.

In 2018, after a complex five-year development and construction program, CMLC, alongside Calgary Public Library , completed the New Central Library project. Upon opening, it earned international acclaim, including being named one of the 'world's most futuristic libraries' and one of The New York Times' 52 Places to Go. Today, the Test of Time Awards recognize something equally important: the project's ability to continue delivering on its functional, community and cultural ambitions years after opening, while playing a central role in the transformation of East Village as envisioned through the East Village Master Plan.

Designed by Snøhetta in collaboration with DIALOG, and brought to life by an exceptional project team including Stuart Olson Inc. and Colliers Project Leaders, Central Library continues to demonstrate the lasting impact of thoughtful city-building, design excellence and investment in major city-building projects.

Today, we honour the Survivors of residential schools, remember the children who never returned home, and recognize the enduring impacts of residential schools on Indigenous Peoples, families and communities.

Earlier this month, CMLC staff gathered to learn from Elder Rod Scout through a discussion inspired by Alex Kwong’s Kitao’wahsinnooni: What Sustains Us project on RiverWalk in East Village. The conversation explored what reconciliation can look like in practice, how projects can create opportunities for relationship-building and knowledge sharing, and how a deeper understanding of the connections between land, water and people can inform the places we help create.

As city-builders we recognize that reconciliation is ongoing work. Meaningful partnerships, listening, learning and approaching our work with humility and respect are important steps on that journey.

Alongside our partners at Truman and Marriott International, we are proud to celebrate another major milestone in East Village with the start of construction on Moxy Calgary East Village.

The new 131-key lifestyle boutique hotel will be located along Jack & Jean Leslie RiverWalk, becoming East Village’s third hotel and the third development project to break ground in the community this year.

As the final prime riverfront development site in East Village, the project will bring new visitor accommodations and hospitality amenities to the neighbourhood, including communal gathering & fitness spaces, bar, and outdoor thermal spa. The hotel will also provide guests with easy access to East Village’s parks, pathways, retail, restaurants, and cultural destinations.

At the same time, East Village continues to attract more residential development. Sumus Bankside recently acquired Blocks Q3 and Q4, where two future mixed-use residential buildings will complete Q Block alongside Slokker's Verve condominium development and the future Vibe rental project.

Together, these investments reflect continued confidence in East Village and advance CMLC’s master plan vision for a a vibrant, mixed-use, creative city neighbourhood.

Construction on Moxy Calgary East Village is anticipated to be completed in 2028.

We are pleased to welcome Ross Bentley to CMLC's Board of Directors.

Ross brings more than 30 years of corporate law experience to the Board. A partner at Blake, Cassels & Graydon, he practiced corporate law for 30 years, focusing on domestic and cross-border merger and acquisition and capital markets transactions across a range of sectors including airline, pipeline, and energey infrastructure, agribusiness, energy services, energy exploration and development, chartered banking and rail. Appointed King's Counsel in 2024, Ross combines professional expertise with a strong commitment to community leadership through his past service with YMCA Calgary, West Island College, and the Toronto Stock Exchange's Listing Advisory Committee.

This selection of before and after photos showcases the dramatic construction progress on the Werklund Centre Transformation (WCT) Expansion and Olympic Plaza Transformation (OPT) projects.

1: August 2025: An aerial view of the project site as the crane was first installed marking the start of vertical construction.
2: September 2026: Thirteen months later, substantial progress has been made on foundations, concrete installation and the theatre box for the new 1,000-seat Osten-Victor Playhouse.

Werklund Centre

Together, CMLC, Werklund Centre and City of Calgary – Your Local Government are proud to celebrate another major milestone in the transformation of Calgary’s premier performing arts campus.

As construction on the Werklund Centre Transformation (WCT) Expansion continues to make dramatic progress, we are pleased to announce that the new 200-seat studio theatre will be named the McCann Family Studio Theatre, recognizing a generous $4 million contribution from Rodney (Rod) J. McCann, Karen McCann, and their immediate family

Building on the support of the Government of Alberta, The City of Calgary, Dave Werklund & Family, and many other philanthropic partners, the McCann Family Studio Theatre will provide a flexible, professionally equipped performance space for culturally diverse and community-based programming, emerging artists, arts education and experimental work.

Construction on the fully funded WCT Expansion and adjacent Olympic Plaza Transformation (OPT) continues to gain momentum, with more than 100 crew members on site daily. Since construction began on the Expansion in 2025, significant progress has been made on foundations, concrete installation, and the theatre box for the new 1,000-seat Osten-Victor Playhouse, with structural steel now taking shape across the site. On OPT, foundations for the new pavilion – which will contain public washrooms and food and beverage offerings – are nearly complete, with further infrastructure and utility work ongoing.

Together, the WCT Expansion, Olympic Plaza Transformation, and future modernization of the existing Werklund Centre represent a generational investment in Calgary’s cultural identity, creating new opportunities for artists, audiences, and community organizations while strengthening the city's downtown core.

Bringing projects of this scale to life takes an extraordinary team. Thank you to the Werklund Centre Transformation design team of KPMB Architects, Hindle Architects and Tawaw Architecture Collective; the Olympic Plaza Transformation design team of Gh3_Architecture, CCxA and Belleville Placemaking; project managers Colliers Project Leaders; and construction manager EllisDon Corporation.

The WCT Expansion and Olympic Plaza Transformation are on track for completion in 2028. Design on the project's third phase, the Modernization of the existing Werklund Centre facility - is complete. Efforts are underway to secure the remaining required funding to enable the start of construction in 2029.
