No one will do business with you if they've forgotten about you. When you've connected with 3 people, drop a note as to what you learned about them, not what you told them.

It’s IT’s fault. The CEO doesn’t really know what’s happening. That department isn’t doing what they’re supposed to do.

Have you ever heard any of these types of comments at your work? Of course, you have. Unfortunately, most of us have uttered those types of comments. They are all part of the blame game. It’s the one game played in all companies too often. Read More: http://inspiredleadershipcommunication.com/

Most of us will book time to meet with others but we don't book time to meet with ourselves. A work-related time to plan and organize is critical. So is time to regain energy and clear your mind. Go for a walk, stop for a coffee, meditate, or just do nothing. Give yourself time to recharge. Don't let your need to be busy get in the way of being effective with a full tank of energy.

Communication is the backbone of great leadership. To me, leadership is a plan, communicate and follow-up continuum. However, it doesn't matter how well I planned, if my team doesn't know or understand my plan, they can't understand my expectations.

Plus, if I haven't allowed my team the opportunity to question me on my plan, I won't know if they know my expectations. And, I won't know if they can meet my expectations.

We toss the word communications around a lot. Too many of us confuse talking or writing with communications. Actual communication has to have two-way engagement to even come close to having full communication. How are you doing in the two-way category? How many times, today, have you done a one-way information dump and thought you were communicating?

Recently I had someone in a training session tell me he thought it was rude to tell someone, "No, I won't do that." It took some time to help him realize I not suggesting you respond to a request with a sharp, "No." The point is, just because someone asks you to do something doesn't mean you must.

Sometimes, depending on your schedule, workload or priorities, requests just can't be met. Then it's appropriate to say to someone you can't do what's asked. Give a valid reason. Use a professional, polite tone, but be firm. My priority isn't your priority so I can't always expect you to be available to jump to my wishes. I expected my direct reports to tell me if they couldn't complete a task.

If you are someone who likes to please others, or just someone who likes to help and get the job done, "yes" may come too easily. It's OK to say "No." How do you say "no" nicely?

Deadlines can be your best friend or a giant pain to productivity, depending on your mindset. For me, deadlines are critical; however, I must have accountability built in. Without accountability it's too easy for me to move deadlines. Moved deadlines tend to end up a totally missed deadlines. So, stop and look at your calendar. Do you set deadlines? Do you stick to deadlines and only change them when reality requires? Do you keep yourself and your team accountable to deadlines? If so, what are the repercussions for missing deadlines?

Share your best deadlines procedures.
