The day began touring the Golden Circle with a stop at Gullfoss Falls- spectacular site.

Then off to my favourite, Little Geyser, which was not little. We got close enough that when the rain poured one had to run fast. Alec still exclaimed we would smell like egg fart.

A trip to the P***s Museum in the bustling core was a must. Replicas and real p***ses were in the flesh, no pun intended.

Iceland is proud allies of LGBTQ2+ so we walked the Pride Walk proudly.

A snack of one of Iceland’s iconic hot dogs was a must (hmm- ironic we visited immediately after the p***s museum). Upon evaluation of taste, value and quality I’d say Costco’s is better at $1.50 which includes a pop. Just sayin’

Recently I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. It honestly makes a lot of sense yet I was accepting my fate and feelings of fatigue, low energy levels and lower productivity in the mornings as a symptom of aging not a sleeping disorder.

Good quality sleep:

😴 Lowers risk of diabetes and heart disease
😍 Reduces stress and irritability
❤️ Assists with warding off illness and inflammation
🧠 Increases brain function

Sometimes we need to redefine and redesign what success actually looks like.

Belonging is more than a black and white issue. It’s also a peony pink, damask gold, and toasted almond one!

Undoubtedly the issue is complex. We feel like we’re walking on eggshells. Unfortunately, there are no easy answers, no shortcuts, no quick fixes. Bringing her Almond Joy-ful sense of humor coupled with her authentic “Brené Brown-er” approach to these tough matters, Tina Varughese recognizes that while we may not always agree when it comes to divergent beliefs and challenging conversations, we are more alike than different.

50 Shades of Beige brings candid and difficult discussions to the fore – from Andrea’s pursuit of peace to Junaid’s desire to fit in to Gurprit’s transformation to Patricio’s authentic belonging.

Because that’s what it’s about. It’s about listening and understanding and appreciating – everyone’s stories, everyone’s feelings, everyone’s pain and joy. It’s about building bridges of understanding, gaining clarity of our own biases and choosing best practices that will work for ourselves, our workplaces and our communities.

Get ready to be a little uncomfortable, gain a lot of perspective and create not only a stronger organization but also a better tomorrow.

I often described myself as an Almond Joy – Brown on the outside, White on the inside and a little bit nutty.

Why? Because it’s a funny, self-deprecating description of how I perceived myself. I learned from a very early age that humor can be a powerful tool. It breaks down barriers, puts others at ease and increases your likeability. Looks fade; funny never does.

As a keynote speaker who has the privilege of the platform, I’ve used humor as a tool to disarm attendees and to build bridges – bridges to strengthen understanding, awareness, compassion and empathy in a divided, divergent, sometimes complex, contradictory and confusing world. Why do we need bridges to understand and ultimately have a sense of belonging? Because we are human. And, at the end of the day, we can become better humans.

Bosses are bossy. They micromanage details and continually undermine. Their feedback isn’t continual and is often confusing. They may mention a path forward but certainly won’t tell you how to get there. Their opinion becomes gospel, and their style is often dictatorial and hierarchical leading to stressed employees, high turnover rates and medical leaves. They breed a toxic workplace culture. It starts and ends at the top.

Leaders offer autonomy, authority and a safe place to land. They not only show you the path, they will lead the way taking you along for the ride. They become part of your family, a mentor and a beacon. Their feedback is continuous, welcomed and specific and they share the hardships and the glory. Laughter at the workplace isn’t considered a waste of time but rather considered a metric of a positive workplace culture.

During my keynotes I often speak about science proving scrolling through social media increases anxiety and stress. Comparing ourselves to augmented images and the literal highlight reels of lives we are privy too, not ones that exemplify authenticity can be damaging.

This summer I am practicing what I preach. I am consciously choosing to live more and scroll less. Looking up, not down and realizing the most important people are right in front of me.

I opened the CEWIL/ECAIT Canada Conference today. Attendees from across Canada that work with universities, colleges, and the public sector focussed on work integrated learning gathered in Calgary, my home city.

Every event is magical and magnificent in its own way. A few notables from this one thad me laughing, learning and sometimes tearing up.
❤️ Anita Abraham,Incoming President for CEWIL is a fellow Mallyallee. Our parents and grandparents came from Kerala, India. Fun fact- Kerala has a 98% literacy rate. Anita said this was the first time she ever saw a Mallu on stage, let alone a women of colour. Though there was an audience of 400 she looked directly at me and said, I can’t imagine the invisible work you did to get here. Our ancestors would be proud. This is not just significant, it is sacred. 👍🏽 During the land acknowledgement, Elder Rod mentioned how important language is. Only 6% of the Blackfoot pop. speak Blackfoot. He said reconciliation is a word. He said the actions behind is what matters. 💡Many attendees introduced themselves and took selfies, shared learnings, shoe recommendations and their a- ha moments. A lovely attendee bravely and boldly told me he expected this to be “yet another feminist talk”. Yet, he said, there was not one person that did not feel seen in that room while I spoke.

This is my why. Diversity is not division. It’s a celebration of everything that matters.

For 13 years I have belonged to the . A sense of belonging, rather than longing to belong, if it be in the workplace, in an association or even in a community is imperative. Yet, so many often feel like they don’t belong. In a very isolating industry of professional speaking I feel blessed to have an esteemed group of colleagues, collaborators, coaches and confidantes to lean on and into. In turn, they lean into me. Oh! And if you are wondering why the first post says, “be less annoying than Tina” and “be less annoying than Mike” it’s because my buddy and I were asked by our presenter to write a note to speakers to strive for 🤣 This is what we came up with.
