A request comes in from the CFO.
The deadline is tight, your team is already working through other priorities, and delivering what’s needed will require some adjustments.

You know what the request involves.
You understand the constraints. But how do you communicate that without sounding unwilling to help?

This is a situation Treasury and Finance professionals may encounter when balancing business priorities, deadlines, and operational responsibilities.

The challenge is not always finding the right answer. Sometimes, it is explaining what can realistically be delivered, what may need to change, and what support or decision is required.

A response that focuses only on the constraint can leave the conversation at a standstill.
A response that explains the constraint and identifies a way forward gives others something to work with.

That doesn’t mean agreeing to every request or pretending every deadline is achievable.
It means being clear about the situation, understanding the other person’s priorities, and communicating your position in a way that keeps the discussion productive.

These are the communication skills that help Treasury and Finance professionals work effectively with senior leaders, manage expectations, and build stronger working relationships.
Soft skills are part of how you do the job not separate from it.

Soft Skills for Treasury & Finance Leaders course is designed to help you strengthen the skills needed to navigate these professional situations with greater confidence.

Not every challenge in Treasury and Finance comes with a clear procedure to follow.

What do you do when a team member repeatedly misses expectations?
When a senior colleague bypasses an established process?
When a stakeholder relationship becomes strained, or team dynamics begin to affect delivery?

These moments call for judgement that goes beyond knowing the policy or identifying the problem.
They require knowing how to respond, what to say, when to speak up, and how to keep the conversation focused on the issue rather than the individual.

For Treasury and Finance professionals moving into leadership, these are important capabilities to develop.
The way you handle them can influence accountability, working relationships and the team’s ability to deliver.

People management is not separate from finance leadership. It is part of the role.

Our Soft Skills for Treasury & Finance Leaders course explores the communication, emotional intelligence, relationship management and leadership confidence that support this growth.

When business growth meets financial constraints, the ability to influence decisions becomes critical.

Consider this scenario.

The business identifies an investment opportunity with significant growth potential. Treasury raises concerns about liquidity, cash flow and the financial flexibility required to pursue that opportunity responsibly.

One side sees the opportunity to move the business forward. The other sees the risks that must be carefully managed.

Both perspectives are valid. The challenge is finding a way forward that considers the commercial opportunity without overlooking financial realities.

This is where professional judgement must be supported by the ability to communicate clearly, challenge assumptions constructively and negotiate competing priorities.

Presenting the numbers is one thing. Helping stakeholders understand the implications, consider alternative perspectives and reach a well-informed decision is another.

The ability to bridge that gap is what makes soft skills essential to effective leadership.

Communication, negotiation, stakeholder management and influence are not simply complementary skills.
They help professionals navigate complex conversations, build credibility and contribute more effectively to decisions that shape business outcomes.

Knowing when to escalate is a test of judgement, communication and leadership not just professional knowledge.

In treasury, some issues can be resolved through routine procedures. Others require timely decisions, additional authority or the involvement of senior stakeholders.

The challenge is recognising the difference.

A payment approaching a critical deadline, a potential liquidity shortfall or a material control concern may require action beyond your immediate responsibilities. Knowing when to raise the issue and how to communicate its implications can influence how effectively the business responds.

An effective escalation goes beyond reporting a problem. It explains what has happened, why it matters, the potential consequences of delay and what action or support is needed.

This gives decision-makers the context they need to assess the situation and determine the next steps.

It also requires confidence: the ability to raise concerns promptly, communicate clearly with senior stakeholders and take responsibility without exceeding the limits of your authority.

The goal is not to escalate every problem. It is to recognise which issues require wider attention and ensure they reach the right people at the right time.

These capabilities extend beyond day-to-day responsibilities. Communication, prioritisation, stakeholder management and sound decision-making all play a role in becoming a more effective treasury and finance leader.

Our Soft Skills for Treasury & Finance Leaders helps professionals strengthen the broader skills needed to navigate workplace challenges, collaborate effectively and lead with greater confidence.

Two people can hear the same message and walk away with two very different conclusions.

That matters in Treasury.

When communicating a liquidity concern, funding constraint, risk exposure, or recommendation, the information itself is only part of the message.
How you frame it can influence how stakeholders interpret the situation and what they believe needs to happen next.

Consider the difference:

“There’s a potential liquidity concern.”

versus

“We have a liquidity problem.”

The underlying situation may be similar, but the message creates a different level of certainty and urgency.

The objective is not to make an issue sound better or worse than it is. It is to communicate it with the right level of context, clarity, certainty, and urgency.

That distinction becomes particularly important when Treasury communicates with executives or stakeholders who may not have the same context behind the numbers.

Strong executive communication makes the situation easier to understand without changing the substance of the message.

This is one of the capabilities explored in Soft Skills for Treasury & Finance Experts, a 4–6 week, self-paced, virtual course covering Executive Communication, Leadership Confidence, Emotional Intelligence, Strategic Relationship Management, Negotiation, Public Speaking, Personal Brand, Team Collaboration, and Executive Influence.

A Treasury meeting can go off track without anyone noticing it at first.

The discussion gets longer.
The decision becomes less clear.
Different stakeholders leave with different interpretations of what happens next.

And eventually, Treasury is asked to follow up, clarify, chase, or resolve what should have been settled in the room.

The issue isn’t always a lack of information.
Sometimes, it is how the conversation is being managed.

Can the key issue be communicated clearly?
Can different perspectives be brought into the conversation without losing sight of the decision?
Can someone challenge an assumption without turning the discussion into resistance?
And when there is no immediate agreement, can the conversation still move toward a clear next step?

These moments matter because Treasury often works across banks, business units, Finance teams, and senior stakeholders each with different priorities and expectations.

Being able to create clarity, influence a discussion, and build alignment is therefore an important part of effective Treasury leadership.

Because strong Treasury leadership isn’t only about knowing what needs to happen.
It’s also about helping the room get there.

This is the kind of capability explored in Soft Skills for Treasury & Finance Experts.

A good Treasury negotiation isn’t about getting the other side to say “yes.”

It’s about understanding what makes the right outcome possible.

Sometimes that means challenging the terms a bank has put forward.
Sometimes it means finding flexibility around funding, timing, or payment priorities.
And sometimes it means recognising that protecting the relationship is just as important as securing the immediate outcome.

The strongest negotiators know what they need, understand what matters to the other side, and recognise where there is room to move.

They can push back without creating unnecessary friction.
They can make a clear case without losing sight of the bigger business objective.
And they can find trade-offs without giving away what matters most.

For Treasury professionals, these moments happen regularly in bank discussions, funding conversations, and decisions involving competing stakeholder priorities.

That is why negotiation is more than a communication skill. It is part of how Treasury creates influence and business value.

This is one of the capabilities explored in Soft Skills for Treasury & Finance Experts.

A cash flow forecast tells you more than how much cash you expect to have.

Look closely, and it can tell you where pressure is building, when timing could become a problem, and where the business may need to make a decision.

But the value of a forecast isn’t in simply producing it.

It is in being able to read what is happening, understand what it means, and make that meaning clear to others.

That is where Treasury professionals create real value.

Because when you can turn a forecast into a clear business conversation, you are no longer just presenting numbers.

You are helping people see what comes next.

And being able to communicate that insight with clarity, confidence, and influence can change how your expertise is experienced in the room.

It can shape how stakeholders understand risk, how quickly decisions are made, and how confidently Treasury contributes to the wider business conversation.

That is one of the capabilities explored in Soft Skills for Treasury & Finance Experts.

What if the problem isn’t your Treasury knowledge?

What if it’s what happens around that knowledge?

The same issue keeps returning.
Everything becomes urgent.
Treasury is brought into decisions too late.
Difficult conversations are avoided.
Everyone has an opinion, but ownership remains unclear.

At that point, the challenge may no longer be technical.
It may be about how effectively you communicate, influence, prioritise, collaborate and lead.

Because knowing the numbers is only part of the job.

You also need to explain what they mean, challenge constructively, influence stakeholders, navigate competing priorities and contribute when decisions become difficult.

Technical expertise gives you the foundation.
Professional skills determine how effectively you use it.

That is the thinking behind Soft Skills for Treasury & Finance Experts.

The course develops practical capabilities in communication, negotiation and influencing, leadership and emotional intelligence, time management, crisis management and conflict resolution.

Not to replace your technical expertise.

To make it more effective.

So, be honest:

Which of these situations sounds familiar in your workplace?

And what could change if you had the skills to handle it differently?

Ready to strengthen the skills behind your technical expertise?

You can be the person with the right answer and still struggle to get the room to move.

That is one of the realities of growing in Treasury and Finance.

Technical expertise can help you analyse the situation.
But what happens when the analysis is challenged?

When your recommendation requires buy-in from people outside Finance?

When you need to push back without creating resistance?

When two stakeholders want completely different things?

When the answer is clear in the numbers but difficult to communicate in the room?

Those moments require a different set of capabilities.

Communication.
Influence.
Negotiation.
Stakeholder management.
Relationship-building.
Confidence in difficult conversations.

These aren’t replacements for technical expertise.

They are what can help you apply that expertise effectively when the situation becomes more complex and more people are involved.

And waiting until you reach a senior role to develop them can mean learning through some very difficult situations.

Soft Skills for Treasury & Finance Experts was created around this gap helping Treasury and Finance professionals deliberately develop the skills that support better communication, stronger stakeholder relationships and more effective professional impact.

Because your technical knowledge may get you trusted with the numbers.

What you do with that knowledge can shape how much influence you have beyond them.

What would you put in the blank?

Then ask yourself a more personal question:

Which skill would make the biggest difference in how you show up in the room?

If you’re ready to develop it, explore the programme and register.
