Homepage overwhelm rarely comes from one bad decision. It's a service added here, a banner there, another button because you wanted to give people options. None of it feels wrong in the moment.

But visitors don't see it as a series of decisions. They land on the finished page and see all of it at once. The headline, three buttons, five services, all fighting for the same amount of space, nothing telling them where to look first. That's what overwhelm is. Not too much information, but too much competing for attention at the same time.

Most people don't stick around to sort it out. More than 4 in 10 leave after that first look, even on strong websites. Overwhelm them, and that number only climbs.

If you're not sure whether your homepage is overwhelming visitors instead of guiding them, drop your link below (or DM it to me) and I'll tell you what I see.

One of my favourite rebuilds to revisit: Play & Family Therapist🎨

Sarah's practice was never the problem. She had the training, the experience, and a genuine gift for connecting with families. Her Wix website just hadn't kept up with any of it.

The challenge wasn't a lack of expertise. It was making sure her website could finally carry it, so families could recognize themselves and feel steady enough to reach out.

I rebuilt it around one idea: help people feel understood before they're ever asked to understand therapy. New structure, new messaging, and a homepage that finally opens with exactly what she means: "Behaviour is never the whole story."

This is the kind of project I care about most. Not a new coat of paint, but a website that actually reflects the practice behind it.

Thank you, Sarah, for trusting me with something this personal.

Responsive design isn't about making your website fit on a phone.

Responsive design is how your website adjusts itself, layout, text size, spacing, images, depending on what screen it's being viewed on. It exists so your site works whether someone's on a laptop, a tablet, or scrolling on their phone in line at the grocery store.

Most people think of it as a technical checkbox. Does the site fit on a small screen without looking broken? Yes, done. But fitting and working well aren't the same thing. A site can technically fit on a phone and still make someone pinch, zoom, or fumble to tap a button that's too small.

Here's why that matters. Most of your visitors are probably on their phone, and probably a little distracted while they're at it. They're not going to fight with your website to read a sentence or find your contact info. If something feels harder than it should on mobile, they don't push through it. They just leave.

A website that feels just as easy on a phone as it does on a desktop tells visitors the business behind it is put together. A clunky mobile experience creates doubt before anyone's even read a word you wrote.

Pull up your website on your phone right now. Is it just as easy to use as it is on your laptop, or are you asking visitors to work around it?

If you've been quietly wondering whether your website is actually working for you, or maybe even avoiding sending people your URL, this is your sign 😊

A Website Assessment isn't a redesign, and it's not me picking your site apart. It's an honest, outside read on what's working, what's not, and what to actually prioritize, delivered in writing so you're not left guessing.

Most people don't waste money on the wrong fix because they're careless. They waste it because they never actually found out what was broken in the first place.

$249 CAD + GST. Delivered in 3 to 5 business days. Link in bio if you're ready to find out!

Every website already has a visual hierarchy. Whether you planned it or not.

Visual hierarchy is just the order your eyes move in when you land on a page. What you notice first, second, third. It's created by size, colour, spacing, and placement, and it exists whether you designed it on purpose or it just happened while you were building the page.

Most people think visual hierarchy means making the important stuff bigger or bolder. So everything gets a bold heading. Every button gets a bright colour. Every section fights for the same amount of attention. And when everything is emphasized, nothing actually stands out.

Here's why that matters. Visitors don't read a page top to bottom like a book. They scan. Their eyes land somewhere first, and that spot tells them what matters before they've read a single word. If everything looks equally important, they have to stop and figure out where to even start. Most people won't do that work. They'll just leave.

A clear hierarchy tells visitors where to look and what to do next without making them think about it. That's what makes a website feel easy instead of overwhelming, and it's part of what makes people trust that you know what you're doing.

Look at your homepage. If someone glanced at it for two seconds, would they know what to look at first? Or is everything asking for attention at once?

Most people don't choose their website platform. They choose whatever got them started.

That's not a mistake. It's just how businesses actually grow. Nobody researches content management systems before they've booked a single client.

But eventually, the platform that got you moving starts pushing back. Not all at once. A workaround here, an app bolted on there, a page that almost does what you need but not quite.

None of that means you chose wrong. It just means your business grew into something the platform was never built to hold.

Take a look at your site. Does it still feel like it fits, or does it feel like you're working around it?

White space isn't wasted space.

It's one of the hardest working parts of a website, even though it doesn't look like it's doing anything. White space (also called negative space) is the breathing room around your text, images, and buttons. It's not unfinished or empty. It's part of the design.

A lot of business owners see white space and think it's a missed opportunity. More text, more logos, more testimonials, more everything, because empty space can feel like it's not pulling its weight. So they fill it in, and the page gets louder instead of clearer.

Here's the problem with that. When there's no room to breathe, people don't read more carefully, they skim faster and absorb less. Their brain has to work harder to figure out what actually matters. White space gives visitors a place to rest their eyes and take in one idea before moving to the next.

It's less about how the page looks and more about how much a visitor can actually take in while they're on it.

A page that feels calm and organized tells people the business behind it is calm and organized too. That's what makes the next step feel easier. Visitors aren't stuck hunting for the important stuff.

Look at your homepage. Does it feel like there's room to breathe, or like you're trying to say everything at once?

Some projects hit closer to home 🌤️

As a parent to a neurodivergent child, I know firsthand what it means for a family to find the right support, the kind that helps you understand your child, celebrate who they are, and believe in what's possible for them.

Daybreak Consulting has been doing exactly that in Metro Vancouver for over 25 years, and getting to build their new website is one of those projects that feels personal in the best way.

This isn't just a website. It's a chance to help more families find the kind of support that can change everything.

Grateful to be part of this one ❤️
