Check out the latest version of the Natchilingmiutut dictionary!

On our website, there is a new white button on the home page. It says, “Dictionary: Natchilingmiutut Kitqikhautit” .

If you click on that button, your screen moves to the PDF viewer for Iguaqšuqti: Natchilingmiutut Kitqikhautit.

After clicking the download button, you can begin scrolling through the pages.

This is a living document. There are still more word lists that are in the research and editing process. We plan to continue to add these terms to the dictionary as time goes on.

We appreciate any feedback, comments and input so that this document can continue to grow, improve and be useful to the continuation of Natchilingmiutut dialect.

Almost 20 years ago we were approached by Miriam Aglukkaq/ Nilaulaaq, who asked for our help to create a dictionary of the Natchilingmiutut words that she had been collecting for many years.
She has been an Inuktitut language teacher in the communities of Talurřuaq and Uqšuqtuuq for many years, and has always been passionate about preserving her Natchilingmiutut dialect for the future generations. She is the team leader for all the Ikajuqtigiit Project work.
This photo was taken in Kuugaarřuk in 2007. With Nilaulaaq leading, we gathered with Natchilingmiutut elders, whom we called our professors. These professors offered us so much terminology and knowledge.
The reason they wanted to help us as much as they could is because they did not want Natchilingmiutut to fall behind among the dialects.

All the syllabic characters on this chart, and as shown in the word samples, are now all officially, "unicode". ( Unicode version 14.0) That means that as the syllabic fonts are updated during this coming year, the additional Natchilingmiutut sounds will be included in the syllabic fonts available on today's computers.
The Ikajuqtigiit Project is currently collaborating with Typotheque to have pull down keyboards developed for Natchilingmiutut language users to be able to write and easily share material written in a way that matches the oral language.
