Farewell, Kate (Kate Cummings )& Jennifer (Jennifer Zhu ）!

Last Friday, we took a coffee break to celebrate two wonderful members of the Fabrik team as they wrap up their co-op terms with us.

Kate Cummings has been with Fabrik for the past eight months, bringing talent, capability, and commitment to everything she has taken on. She also played an important role as a camp leader during both weeks of our Summer Design Discovery program.

Jennifer Zhu will complete her co-op with us at the end of this month. Throughout her time at Fabrik, she has brought care, positive energy, and a willingness to take on new challenges. She also contributed tremendously to our Summer Design Discovery program as a camp leader.

In September, both Kate and Jennifer are heading to Rome for their fall semester with their cohorts at Waterloo Architecture . We are grateful for everything they have contributed to Fabrik and the Forum, and excited to see where this next chapter takes them.

Thank you, Kate and Jennifer. Have an incredible semester in Rome — buon viaggio!

Together with Urban Minds — The Youth Engagement People , we opened our studio for Inside Access: Fabrik Architecture Tour, inviting students to experience architecture beyond the final building. From the design studio to the Gaslight District (Gaslight District Cambridge )and the University of Waterloo School of Architecture (Waterloo Architecture ), the day traced the journey from education to practice, and from ideas to the built environment.

We believe architecture becomes more meaningful when its processes are shared. By opening our studio, we hope to make the profession more accessible and encourage a broader public conversation about design, cities, and the built environment.

Thank you to Urban Minds, Tina Davidson, and the University of Waterloo School of Architecture for making this collaboration possible.

Alongside our public programs, Fabrik’s design and research continues.

Affordable housing is often governed by what is considered financially possible. Corridors shrink. Shared spaces disappear. Social life is treated as excess.

At Fabrik, our housing research continues to advocate for the social corridor—not because it is easy to justify, but because we believe it matters. A space wide enough to pause, encounter neighbours, and extend life beyond the unit.

We understand the economic pressures and regulatory constraints that often render these ideas “impossible.” Still, architecture carries a responsibility to argue for forms of living that are more collective, generous, and humane.
Density without isolation. Efficiency without erasure.
