🚨 BIG NEWS FOR B.C. HOMEOWNERS! DOOR-TO-DOOR SOLAR SALES ARE NOW RESTRICTED BY LAW! ☀️

This is BIG news for the solar industry — and an important step toward protecting homeowners from high-pressure sales tactics.

As of August 1, 2026, B.C. introduced new consumer protection regulations prohibiting certain unsolicited door-to-door solar sales.

While we welcome these protections, the fact that legislation became necessary is a troubling reflection of some of the sales practices emerging during the current solar gold rush.

After 17 YEARS in the solar industry, we've received heartbreaking phone calls from homeowners who tell us they've been pressured, misled or bullied into signing solar contracts worth tens of thousands of dollars.

SOLAR IS AN INCREDIBLE TECHNOLOGY. HIGH-PRESSURE SALES TACTICS HAVE NO PLACE IN OUR INDUSTRY.

A properly designed solar system can offset 100% or more of some customers' annual electricity consumption. But going solar is a major home improvement, and homeowners deserve honest advice, realistic production estimates and time to make informed decisions.

☀️ BEFORE YOU SIGN A SOLAR CONTRACT, PLEASE REMEMBER:

✅ Get at least THREE estimates from qualified local solar contractors, where available.

✅ Visit their offices. Meet their team. Find out how long they've actually been operating in your community.

✅ Ask whether they employ their own qualified electricians or subcontract their installations.

✅ Find out who will handle warranty work. Are they local, or will you be waiting for someone to travel from off-Island or out of province?

✅ Don't automatically believe the company promising the highest electricity production.

✅ Remember: A 25-year warranty is only as valuable as the company standing behind it.

ARE BATTERIES BECOMING THE NEW NORMAL?

This caught our attention:

37% of new residential solar systems installed in the U.S. in 2025 were paired with battery storage — up from 25% the year before.

That’s a U.S. statistic, but we’re curious what Vancouver Island thinks.

As we head into another West Coast winter — with windstorms and power outages always a possibility — we’re seeing more homeowners and businesses asking about battery backup.

And we understand why.

A properly designed battery system will keep the important things running when the grid goes down. It can be paired with a new solar system, added to an existing solar installations, or installed without solar at all.

After 17 years of designing solar, battery and off-grid power systems on Vancouver Island, we’ve watched the technology change enormously. Battery storage is quickly becoming a much bigger part of the conversation.
