Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society - CWSS

A partnership to support abundant wildlife populations and sustainable greenspaces in Camrose, AB.

The Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society (CWSS) began in 2002. We
acknowledge that wildlife and their habitats provide many benefits to the city,
including:
- educational opportunities for people of all ages
- desirable recreational opportunities
- substantial economic benefits through wildlife tourism, land values, and ecosystem services

We recognize that the wildlife and greenspaces in Camrose

make our city unique and beautiful. We enjoy our greenspaces and wildlife and recognize that we must put effort into maintaining and conserving these aspects of our city so that they can be enjoyed for years to come. One way in which we do this is by providing opportunities for community members to experience and learn about nature and
wildlife through our summer environmental education programs. Each summer we offer an education series on wildlife and greenspace issues. The programs are offered from the end of May to the beginning of August. Each Thursday night we will host a program at 7pm at the Stoney Creek Centre. We cover a variety of interesting topics, including, but not limited to butterflies, alien
species and naturescaping. Goals and Objectives
- To increase Camrose residents’ awareness and understanding of wildlife and greenspace
- To ensure wildlife and greenspace concerns are considered in planning and management
- To minimize wildlife conflicts affecting public safety and property
- To encourage research on wildlife and habitats in Camrose

Meet Camrose’s new City Bird, the Purple Martin! Thank you to everyone who participated in the City Bird vote, your involvement helps celebrate all of our wonderful local birds.

Purple Martin’s are known for their social nature and iridescent blueish-purple feathers. After spending the winter in South America, they journey here to breed, in the spring, taking residence in about 50 birdhouses in Camrose. Many Purple Martins will return to the same house they were born in to raise a family of their own. They are insectivorous, flying up to 45km/h to capture insects mid-flight.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the City Bird Announcement last night and congratulations to those that won prizes! If you were not able to make it last night, we would like to share that the Purple Martin took the win!

We hope you can join us next week on August 20, 7pm at Valleyview Pond at the gazebo on the southeast side of the pond for a tree planting demonstration with Dean Alix.

Dean is the Senior Operator of the Parks Department at the City of Camrose and he will be showing us how to plant a tree like an expert! We hope to see you there!

Thank you to Louis Ducsharm from the Camrose Public Library for joining us last night and giving us a very informative presentation on guerilla gardening and what it might look like in our community!

Next week’s event on August 13, 7pm at the Stoney Creek Centre will be the City Bird Announcement with the Bird Friendly City Committee. Come celebrate the new City Bird of Camrose and learn all about our new mascot!

Thank you to Dr. Dayna Goldsmith for coming to talk last night about avian influenza and teaching us how it’s transmitted, why it’s important as well as how we can help prevent the spread!

Next weeks presentation will be on Health and our Natural World with Louis Ducsharm from the Camrose Public Library. Join us on August 6th, 7pm at the Stoney Creek Centre to learn about how engaging with nature can affect our physical, mental, and social health!

Thank you to Glenys Smith for sharing her vast knowledge of plants and gardening with us and how to keep the “bad” bugs away!

Thank you to Jeremy Enarson for a very informative presentation on how the City has come together to get through the flooding event and what the City is doing to protect the public!

We hope you can join us next week, July 16, 7pm at the Stoney Creek Centre to learn more about Organic Solutions for Pest Management on flower gardens with Glenys Smith. Time will be provided to make a plan for your own garden!

With so much rainfall already this year, and so many pests around, we decided to shift the presentation away from drought stress treatments as we most likely won’t experience a drought this summer and talk about how to keep pests away from flower gardens.

Update for July 9 Presentation, 7pm at the Stoney Creek Centre on Water Supply, Use, and Conservation:

In light of the recent flooding event in Camrose, the presentation will shift its focus slightly toward more information about how the City has been responding to the flooding.

Between May 30 and July 2, the City of Camrose received almost 270 mm of rain, which is more than 3 times the amount that the City typically receives during this time. As a result, the City opened the Emergency Coordination Centre on June 29, and spent much of the next week dealing with the direct and indirect impacts of these major rainfall events. Come to the Stoney Creek Centre to hear more about the 2026 flood events, and what the City has done and is doing to protect the public!
